John McCain Owns VoteForTheMILF.com?
Updates:
First, some Updates:
- If you were one of the 120,000 visitors who experienced the redirect before it was changed, post a comment below for the record.
The Redirect has been changed 5 times over 48 Hours:
-From the time this article was published, until 3:34 PM EDT (9.29.08), the redirect pointed to John McCain.com as explained in video and screenshots below. The redirect had received about 120,000 clicks just through GovGap by this time and had just started to be picked up widely by other blogs and media outlets (Washington Post, FireDogLake, etc.) when the redirect was changed.
-As of 3:35 PM EDT (9.29.08) The redirect has been changed to direct users to google.com
-As of 3:49 PM EDT (9.29.08) The redirect has been changed to direct users to a Wikipedia page about domain registration.
-As of 9:11 PM EDT (9.30.08) The redirect has been changed to direct users to a blog entry suggesting that the redirect was a simple prank.
-As of 3:02 AM EDT (10.01.08) The redirect has been changed to direct users to google.com.
Washington Post Picks Up Story, NYTimes Published list of RNC Owned Domain Names:
-Washington Post publishes an Article and requests comment from the McCain Campaign. McCain Campaign denies any involvement, suggesting the URL redirection was a prank they have nothing to do with, and no control over.
-The NYTimes published a verified list of opposition URLS owned by the Republican National Committee

Original Post:
Video:
Visit VoteForTheMILF.com and you will be redirected specifically to a video intro by Gov. Sarah Palin at JohnMcCain.com if you are hitting it for the first time. Note that the redirect sends you first to JohnMcCain.com and THEN to Palin.htm (Palin’s Video Intro) if you’re visiting for the first time, or if your cookies are cleared, or if you’re not accepting cookies. Here’s a video of this taking place:
- URL Registered within hours of McCain’s Decision to select Palin as running mate
- Redirect sends users specifically to a palin.htm file, but only on the FIRST redirect
- Whois Privacy Information Matches JohnMcCain.com Whois Privacy
- URL Held by same registrar
- Note that the .net and .org versions also redirect to the McCain Campaign Website.
Network Tools.com Trace Route:
- 64.203.107.149 (VoteForTheMILF.com)
- 64.203.107.149 (JohnMcCain.com)

It’s impossible to know if this is an intentional or unintentional error on the part of the McCain Campaign, but it wouldn’t be at all surprising. Seems they’re just learning to use the “internet/the google” to promote their candidate (as in: accidentally releasing ‘McCain Wins Debate’ ads 14 hours before First Presidential Debate and 4 Hours before McCain decided he was going to debate after all.):
More than likely, some underling in the McCain Campaign was told to buy up dozens and dozens of related URLS within the McCain Campaign GoDaddy account (perhaps all of the variations of John McCain’s name, Campaign Slogans, opposition URLS, etc) and just set them all to redirect to their main site which can be easily done within the GoDaddy control panel by selecting all the URLS and setting up a forward or simple redirect with a PHP header in any of those sites.
Whoever was in charge probably did not distinguish between the URLS they had bought for misspelled attempts to get to the campaign website / thematic redirects (IE: JohnMcCainForPresident.com), and the urls they had bought to deny the opposition territory to make anti-McCain websites; McCainSucks.com, etc.
It will be most interesting to see if this redirect changes. If the redirect is discontinued, it’s probably most certainly the McCain Campaign … (Hi Steve! Hey Rick! Say ‘howdy’ to John for me - and tell him good luck with his lousy sleazy campaign!) … if not, it’s someone trying to improve their page rank.
In either case, we’ll be monitoring the publicly available Whois information carefully.

As of 4:23PM (EDT) The Whois has been set to ‘Private’ for the .com and .net versions of this URL.

UPDATE 3:
SomeoneGNU (Digg.com) brought this to GOVGAP’s attention:
Little interesting fact - the first time you go to the link you’re actually redirected to: http://www.johnmccain.com/palin.htm which means they’re watching for that domain. All other times, you go right to the front page.
Either they’re reacting to this domain really well, or they own it.
UPDATE 4:
There’s some discussion going on in the Digg thread about the origins of the redirect:

UPDATE 5:
TrackBack Comment Round Up:
From: Washington City Desk
GovGap published a story last night revealing that www.voteforthemilf.com, www.voteforthemilf.net, and www.voteforthemilf.org all direct users to John McCain’s campaign website.
…
This is actually a pretty common means of anticipating counter information. When the American Dental Association, a proponent of water fluoridation, learned that an anti-fluoride group owned the domain name fluoridealert.org, the ADA bought the domains fluoridealert.com and fluoridealert.net, and redirected both addresses to the ADA page on the benefits of fluoride. If the McCain camp did indeed buy these domain names, we now know that the camp never really expected voters to view her primarily as a serious political or intellectual threat.
From Blog RPI:

sexist much? what a bunch of wankers….
OMG…thanks for posting the proof before McCain’s camp changes the re-direct.
Yes, domains by proxy is a service and yes it does hide owner information but this isn’t a redirect. Domains by proxy do not hide DNS Servers. Just registration information. Hmm, anyone have access to domain tools to see what other domains are also hosted on the DNS A.NS.TRESPASSERS-W.NET? 463 domains, bet they are all part of the McCain Camp.

Yea but voteforthegilf.com doesn’t have the exact same ip when you ping it.
Does it even matter? Of course they will buy up all the domains they can, you dont think the obama campaign did too? Hoax. The domain is just privacy protected with godaddy to look the same. The webserver hosting johnmccain.com is configured to redirect all unconfigured requests on 64.203.107.149 to http://www.johnmcain.com. And the default behavior of http://www.johnmccain.com is, as mentioned above, to redirect all first time visitors to /palin.html via a cookie check.

i saw it i was telling my coworker about it and just checked again and was supprised to go to a wiki …
I was lucky too, lol
Last time I checked it was this morning at it was still directing to the McCain website. After work, I check again and it appears they “fixed” the “glitch.” Total crap. The McCain campaign is full of pathological liars.
hypocrisy is John McCains middle name. Calling the Democrats sexist for their attacks on Palin but has his campaign has the gall to register this website for redirection.
Good work for pointing it out!
I noticed the redirect went down. IMO this was an intentional redirect from the McCain website gurus (whether directed by the campain hq or not) to the Palin page. The IPs of the two servers are the same:
dig johnmccain.com +short && dig voteforthemilf.com +short
64.203.107.149
64.203.107.149
Also, the voteforthemilf.com domain did not only redirect to the McCain camp homepage, and importantly, did not directly redirect to the Palin page. So:
1. set the IP address to the same server. (any domain owner can do that)
2 redirect to johnmccain.com homepage (again, anydomainowner can do that, but not with step 1).
3. add a redirect from johnmccain.com to johnmccain.com/palin.htm
Steps two and three have to be done by someone who has access to the johnmccain.com website. And step 3 specifically redirects the voteforthemilf.com domain to the palin.htm page.
If the objective was to divert traffic to the McCain/Palin campaign, there would be no need to add the 3rd step.
cheers

OBVIOUSLY THIS WAS NOT A PRANK. It was clearly a weak attempt by the McCain campaign to seem hip. For disbelievers, just one question:
- IF THIS WAS A PRANK, WHY WOULD THEY CHANGE THEIR REDIRECT TO A WIKI PAGE? That wikipedia link basically said, “anyone could’ve registered the page and linked to johnmccain.com”. <– So why would they change it at all!? If the intent of this page was to embarass the Mccain/Palin campaign, why would they change their site? Especially when it just starts to get attention from the internet community. Obviously this was a defensive move to try to escape the shame in registering a site as ridiculous as this. McCain and Palin ARE A JOKE. OBVIOUSLY. This story hasn’t made it to the major media sources because it’s not even as incriminating as the things McCain and Palin say every single day. All I need to say is: “The fundementals of the economy are strong” - “I think the lack or regulation has been a major reason for the growth of the economy over the past 8 years” - McCain

[...] 3rd, 2008 · No Comments I’m not sure what’s more disturbing - that the McCain campaign may own the URL for VotefortheMilf.com (via FDL, C&L, and initially dKos), or that running Palin is a direct appeal to the horny white [...]
A friendly suggestion: Tell the whole story at the top of the page in terms a non-specialist can understand. If you’d like some help with that, I’m an experienced writer whose specialty has long been the “translation” of complex subjects to everyday English. Feel free to contact me at the e-mail address I left with you.
My vote against it being a hoax is that most people getting the kind of traffic this thing seems to be getting (particularly since the scrutiny) would likely be redirecting to porn by this point, to capitalize on it.

Very intriguing work, folks.
Here’s a question: What role does Smartech Corporation (IP Address: 64.203.96.233) play in this?
One last note: The Donatelli Group
Via Sourcewatch (from cache as the page says it has too many connections):
“”When New York Senate candidate Rudolph Giuliani began his campaign against First Lady Hillary Clinton, one of his first moves was to register as many domain names as possibly [sic] that related to both himself and his opponent.
“Buying up Internet names that ‘belong’ to someone else is a recent trend that Martin Edlund of Hockaday Donatelli Campaign Solutions says is ‘a precautionary move.’ The campaign fundraising firm was responsible for managing Giuliani’s web presence. ‘If we control the domain name, we can decide who uses it. If we don’t, anyone can’,” Edlund said. [14]
The domain name HILLARYNO.COM, for example, has been registered to Hockaday-Donatelli Campaign Solutions since March 17, 1999, and is due to expire (unless renewed) on March 17, 2008, and HILLARYNO.ORG was secured October 16, 2002, and likewise is due to expire March 17, 2008.”
