Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said in an interview aired Tuesday that the cost of the mortgage bailout plan may rein in his ambitious plans for health care, energy, education and infrastructure.
Obama's comments reflect the possible new constraints on the next president's ability to expand or start programs or cut taxes. The government financial interventions of the past two weeks could cost more than $1 trillion.
Obama told NBC’s Matt Lauer on the “Today” show that he doesn’t expect the mortgage plan to cost the full $700 billion right away, and all the money won’t be lost.
“Does that mean that I can do everything that I've called for in this campaign right away?” Obama said. “Probably not. I think we're going to have to phase it in. And a lot of it's going to depend on what our tax revenues look like.”
Obama was interviewed by Lauer on Monday in Green Bay, Wis.
The Democrat attacked Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for initially opposing the federal government’s intervention to save insurance giant AIG.
“I think what has been clear during this entire past 10 days is John McCain has not had clarity and a grasp on the situation,” Obama.
But Lauer pointed out that Obama’s running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), had initially said the same thing – on “Today,” no less.
“I think that in that situation, I think Joe should have waited, as well,” Obama said.
It’s very rare for one ticket mate to publicly second-guess the other. But on the “CBS Evening News” on Monday, Biden had chastised his own campaign for a TV ad portraying McCain as a computer illiterate. Biden backed off his criticism of the ad in a statement the campaign released three hours later.
On Sunday, in an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood, Obama had suggested he would not have to make changes in his spending plans.
“My health care plan is paid for,” Obama said. “And I continue to believe that rolling back the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans makes sense. They are still going to be wealthy after those are rolled back. I still believe that it is important for us to make college more affordable. And I think it's important that all those things are paid for in light of this huge additional potential expense.”
Also interviewed Sunday by Harwood, McCain said he believes he can still balance the budget in his first term. “I believe we can still balance the budget,” he said, citing “restraint of spending … and the recovery of our economy.”
I think the next debate should be between 0bama and Tuzla Dash Biden. Axelrod completely owns 0bama, down to telling him when to blink, but he can't get ownership of Biden. Maybe Biden thinks he's actually running for President?
May ? More like you can expect it. The question is will the American people elect the "Axis of Incompetence"......Obama, Nancy, and Harry? Can anyone even begin to imagine these three known left-wingers running this "center-right" country? Can anyone imagine the type of Supreme Court justices that they would select?
I'm sorry but these three clueless Democrats simply don't represent this country, at all. Polls are tighten more today's two polls that have been released show McCain with a two point lead in the Battleground poll and today's Rasmussen has each candidate at 48% each, a tie.
If The Emperor Without Clothes, Obama isn't up by at least 5% in the battlegournd states he will lose. Tie's will go to McCain as the primaries showed us Obama polls a lot higher than what he usually gets in actual votes.

Here in the Bay State, home of Cambridge super-geniuses who look down upon those "confused but basically decent" people in flyover country, our kids are getting dumber and dumber. Why? One reason might be the education bureaucracy's complete rejection of standards. Last year, every Democrat in the state senate voted to give teaching certificates to teachers who failed the basic skills test at least three times. Now members of that same "progressive" wing of the Massachusetts Left want to get rid of the Massachusetts MCAS basic skills test for students. Why? Because our kids are so smart that we just don't need it? Uh, no. It's because, as UMASS professor James Nehring puts it, so many of our high school kids CAN'T pass it, "the system if collapsing on itself." Remember that this is a test for high school seniors that only shows a mastery of 10th grade level skills. About half our state's public schools have failed to get the passing rate up to the acceptable level. And the solution is...to dump the test? Brilliant. Then again, what's the point of passing the test if you're going to attend UMASS-Amherst? Their "high academic standards" involve giving college credit to kids who drive to New Hampshire and campaign for Sen. Barack Obama. Unfortunately (for loonies at Amherst, anyway), the media found out and the school was forced to cancel their plans. But hey--it sure beats studying economics, math and all that other tough stuff. Or as they say at the UMASS-Amherst MoveOn.Org meetings: Skip Class! Stay Stupid! Vote Obama!Just saying
It's easy to scale back or make more promises knowing that you have no intention of keeping the promises anyway. I recall all of Bill Clinton's promises and then he said "things are much worse than I ever imagined". Remember how the media perpetuated his montra "the worst economy in 50 years"? Then my taxes increased nearly 50%. More lies from a man and party that has no problem in distorting the truth even when it's documented. They either steal the documents with the evidence, as in the case with Sandy Berger, or they just say it didn't happen or they spike the story as with Monica Lewinsky.
If Republicans do that then the country get's rid of them. If Libs do it then they get the Nobel Peace Prize.
I want, and expect, and deserve a politician who will be honest, and not hide behind 527's distortions. I want a politician who reprimands and holds the media accountable by refuting the lies in the print. I want someone who will be honest with us and no think that we're idiots.
I don't think that either of our candidates are that way based upon the speeches and ads currently running. My problem is I've got to vote for someone, and I think McCain has more of what I'm looking for than Obama. Obama's promises are as empty as his suit.

HAH!! Sounds like a few cracks in the facade between Biden and his love buddie Obama. First Biden calls out Obama on his terrible ad making fun of McCain's war wounds, then Obama calls out Biden for speaking without his approval. The gay love affair is over it seems and now we have two smelly old liberal queens fighting over who gets to pitch and who gets to catch. This is great, what a total election meltdown for the dems. See you idiots in 2012 when you can try again!!
So... Does that mean that Obama won't be giving every American $1,000 taken directly from the oil companies to vote for him? No chicken in every pot? Or, is it the chickens are coming home to roost? Maybe, chicken one day, feathers the next? Oh, never mind... The takeaway: There will be no folding money given out to vote for the Democrats and no "change" in health care, energy, education and infrastructure, either. Hmmmm...
