Defending America - April 2006 Cover Story

The Pentagon wants to deploy a host of exotic new weapons systems. Critics say too much of this costly hardware is designed to fight the wrong war.

The attack would come quickly, and it would be awful. Cruising far offshore, the U.S. Navy's DD(X) destroyer launches 20 artillery shells in less than a minute. As the satellite-guided weapons fall back to Earth at 830 mph, computer algorithms alter their flight paths so that the 250-pound projectiles all strike the same patch of ground at the same time, reducing everything in the vicinity to rubble and dust. If more firepower is needed, the destroyer can unleash another 580 artillery rounds, as well as 80 Tomahawk missiles. And when the attack is over, the ship simply vanishes. On a radar screen, the DD(X)'s stealthy hull makes the 14,000-ton vessel look like just another fishing boat, casting its nets into the sea.

I work for a small R&D company as well, and we spend millions of earmarked dollars on risky technologies that will provide at best questionable benefit _if_ they work as advertised by our revolving-door ex DoD management. I'd rather lose my job than have the government continue to waste tax dollars on pointless defense technologies. Get real... the biggest threat to our country today is the military industrial complex.

Both the commenters forgot to mention: it's mainly about killing people and keeping the rest living in fear, rather than educating yourselves and learning to work together with other human beings... Money can't buy your children back, maybe they will be conscripted and you will start to learn when your murderous technologies hit home...

As a Vietnam Veteran Marine. my company is doing the very same and wholeheartedly agree with the comments. Major suppliers do not want the competition from small companies with the same mission. We are developing new, lighter materials to protect our soldiers, however the DOD feels it is much easier to use the same rather than buy small quantities to field test in combat which may indeed be an improvement to existing technology, at the same time, it prevents small businesses dedicated to improving additional protection from gaining acceptance of our products and also it prevents the people serving from buying the improved equipment. It is up to the small businesses to strive to prenetrate the big boys market. Semper Fi

Dear Sir We are a small R/D company that have pledged to support our Military to maintain its leadership role in the world, in these times, it is now more important than ever. We are currently developing technology that will enable our Military to keep their status as being the strongest in the world. Our efforts focus on new advanced technology based on existing platforms for weapon delivery systems for all existing platforms that are available today. We are all part of a movement in the private sector that wants a strong America, we are not politically driven, but we are all concerned at the current public opinion that has been fueled by the media giants. I just would like to be known that are still those who believe in honor and country, and we all will do our part to make sure that our way of life will never falter. The current media has an agenda that is undermining the values that make America great. We are a silent group that will offer our services to our country and only our country. Its not about money, its is about honor and respecting the sacrifices that our fore fathers made and those who defended our nation. It is our way of saying thank you.
