Report: Apple Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel hits piracy sites
Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 11:14 AM EST

"There is nothing at all that prevents the version of Mac OS X that runs on the developer transition machines from running on any PC with compatible components," Jeff Harrell writes for The Shape of Days. "The Intel-based Power Macintoshes that Apple is showing at their developer conference are based on an Intel motherboard, generic Intel graphics and off-the-shelf Pentium 4 CPUs... I estimate that we’re down to a matter of hours before Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel hardware is available for download on Internet software piracy sites and peer-to-peer piracy networks. (Update: A reader who for obvious reasons wishes to remain anonymous just demonstrated to me that the software is, in fact, already available on Internet software piracy sites.) If I can think through this stuff, Apple’s management can think through this stuff. This is the most awe-inspiring stealth marketing move I’ve ever seen."

"According to reports, Apple’s bundled iLife applications, major selling points for the Mac operating system, are already Intel-native and run at full speed... Given Apple’s experiences with software piracy, particularly the rampant software piracy that spread developer builds of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger all over the Internet this past spring, Apple’s management from the top down knows full well that this developer preview will be in the hands of every kid with a cable modem within days of its release. Most of them will be able to install it on their own computers and run it and the full suite of iLife ’05 applications at full speed, and run most existing Mac software in translation. As a result, Apple will give thousands, possibly millions, of people a taste of Mac OS X running full speed on their own PCs. Apple’s giving their potential future customers a free taste, that’s what they’re doing. It’s a try-before-you-buy deal," Harrell writes.

No way...?

Jun 11, 05 - 11:11 am Comment from: Eddy

What's the use??

It only runs on the MacIntel Developer edition right??

Jun 11, 05 - 11:16 am Comment from: Thomas

I would love to try. It would be cool if us Mac owners could download a 30 day trial from Apple. I am not going to or have I ever ripped off Apple or any other software maker. As for Mp3's from CD's I have purchased 2-3 times.....

I think this whole switch will be killer. When the Mac whent to 68k to PPC it was great. This will be even better. Job's and the boys and girls at Apple are AMAZING with hardware. If they think this is a good idea, it's probably a great idea.

My 2 cents

Jun 11, 05 - 11:18 am Comment from: Anonymous

It runs on my PC. I built it myself - Intel mobo - and it ain't a Mac, that's for sure. iLife runs, too.

Jun 11, 05 - 11:20 am Comment from: BriAnimations

So uhh... where'd you get it? Not that I even have a PC, but I'm sure some of my friends who have been curious about macs would love to take it for a spin...

Jun 11, 05 - 11:39 am Comment from: Jeffrey

Perhaps the software expires after a certain period. Remember, Jobs said the that the Dev Kits had to be returned when they were done.

While I understand the "Stealth" value of this..... in the end... this is what I fear the most. Apple software, running on off the shelf hardware.

As we all know, Apple has never had any type of restriction on the install of their OS. You can buy one copy and install and install and install all you want with no "phone home" schemes to keep you honest. What was the point? Whatever hardware you wanted to install it on, was bought from Apple to begin with, so they were happy.

Now, regardless of what Steve says, someone's going to find away(like they already have) to run this on Non-Apple hardware, and once that starts happening, we can all kiss Apple good by.

Jun 11, 05 - 11:39 am Comment from: bob

Hopefully Apple's lawyer's get on this pretty soon. If people can have it for free why should they buy anything from Apple.

Jun 11, 05 - 11:47 am Comment from: BriAnimations

Bob - because this is just a preview OS - and the later versions of OS X will not run on any PC - if the Developer Preview can actually do that. Can anbody confirm that it can? Or is this all speculation?

I WANT IT NOW!!!

MW: "keep", as in "try to keep me from downloading it"

Jun 11, 05 - 12:23 pm Comment from: dave

Perhaps apple doesn't >really< care.

It's free exposure. Both to the people doing it and to people reading about it happening.

It's limited usefulness. There's no way it'll work well on more than a small number of configurations (firewire devices? video cards?). TFA has a good point. It's a taste.

The people installing it would never have bought a mac anyway. And now they'll have a reason too.

Also if anyone attempts to sell it (or a system to run it) Apple will sue them until the end of time itself.

All this l33t downloader stuff is just noise in the big picture.

Jun 11, 05 - 12:33 pm Comment from: chuch

If this is true ... it is very cleaver. It will only be the computer "geeks" who even know how to find it, download it, and how to install it. Lets face the average computer user does not have those skills. By letting this trickle into the hands of the kids and computer enthusiasts, it is exposing them to the OS in a very Linux like way. This exposure will probably be the first time many of them have ever used a Mac OS. (I know the IT guys at my work have NEVER used Mac OSX. They play around with Linux, and other alternative Operating systems all the time, but never recommend or switched to Mac because the are not familiar with it.) Most people I know ask a Techie friend or coworker who built their own computer, "What kind of computer should I get?" before they make a purchase. I usually hear, "Buy a Dell." in response. The average end user probably lacks the sophistication to get Linux running, and the Techie friend may have used a Mac in grade school, but probably has no real hands on knowledge of OSX. After all it won't run on their home built, barn burning, custom kick ass game machine.

By letting this slip out into the "Geek" community, it will increase awareness of OSX, its features, and the ever critical word of mouth recommendations. It does so in a way that adds credibility to the recommendation. The Mac Guy/Gal will always say buy a mac. This if true, will probably cause the rest of the computer enthusiasts out there to say the same thing.

I think the final version of the intel OS will lock out non apple hardware. I remember the days when you could buy a mother board, and even home build a Mac... only problem was you had to Kill a Mac to Make a Mac. I don't know what Apple has in mind, but what ever method they use, will only really be cracked by the hardcore users... who.. I think in reality, Apple should WANT to be paying around with the OS.

Just my strange rambling thoughts...

So .. when is Google gonna pick up your headline, MDN? I wanna see some action. Ain't nothin' gonna happen if this three day old blog story just sits in here with us mumblin' on about it.

Jun 11, 05 - 12:45 pm Comment from: Jack Arends

It is still the developers version and bound to have some bugs. Meanwhile I am sure that when Leopard comes out it is gonna be a really killer OS because it is what will be launched head to head with Longshorn (if Longshorn does not fall further behind schedule wink ) AND I am sure that Leopard will not run on anything but Macs. How many dozer kids who got used to running an illegal version of Panther on their PCs will HAVE TO HAVE Leopard? My guess would be a lot. And if they have to abandon their pirated Panther cuz it is not supported and becomes obsolete, you KNOW they are gonna be going through severe withdrawal pains. So what will they do? Why, buy an Almight Mac of course. It will be able to run BOTH windows if they need it and OS X for everything else and the majority of their time.

I think overall I agree with the writer. This is not gonna hurt Apple. And if Apple did indeed do it on purpose it may be one of the sneakiest things I have ever seen. Good job. Or should I say "Good Jobs"? Hehehe

By the way, I think that would be a better name for the Intel Macs - "Almighty Macs". It sounds much better than Macintel or Mactel and really describes the situation that will arise better.

The Almighty Mac is gonna kick some butt, fellas.

Jun 11, 05 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Krixkrax

Microsoft has more million dollar income from selling operating system than Apple has from entire product range. So imagine the next. If Apple catch only 10% of the traditional Microsoft ( as a Big brother) customers, can get much more money than now can. It is the bull.

And be real, we will buy Apple hardware no matter of intel or ibm chip inside. Apple hardware is always king alone, too.

Jun 11, 05 - 12:59 pm Comment from: Robert Paulsen

Can anyone tell me where they got it? I am trying to convince my mom to buy a mac, maybe if i could get it to run on her comp she would see how much better it is. I almost convinced her last winter break when I brought my iMac home and I think a little more use would make her switch.
I understand if you dont want to post a link or a site on here so email: or IM me: hdty6776

exactly. it's like me being in my band that isn't that popular.. do i really care if people get a copy of our EP for free when some people pay? No, not really... Exposure = awesome. Download our songs... tell your friends! Maybe then we'll be making some more money on show days.

Jun 11, 05 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Bonsai

Robert,

That is a very stupid thing to ask on a public forum and even a bigger mistake that you posted your email and IM id.

Dude, if you want something like this don't post it on a public forum, that's a sure way of getting in trouble.

On Topic:

I really don't see a point to this. The whole point of having a Mac, be it an IBM or Intel processor based, is that you get whole widget from one company/vendor and the OS X and the HW it runs on is guaranteed to work with full efficiency.

Now when you run OS X on crapware, the OS is no better than winblows, the virus, spyware, etc. aside; but you lose the efficiency with the HW.

Jun 11, 05 - 01:22 pm Comment from: gwm

Well, is this thing showing up on the piracy sites or is it not? I say it's not. I hate bullshit. Put up or shut up, eh?

Jun 11, 05 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Engineer

Mac OS X Tiger easily blows Windows XP away no matter what hardware you can get it to run on. Sure, it's best on Apple hardware, but even when it's running on my Dell, it makes me realize how much Windows XP sucks and how lazy and mediocre Microsoft seems to be. And, no, I'm not telling how I got my copy of Mac OS X 10.4.1 (8B1025).

Jun 11, 05 - 01:39 pm Comment from: Hello Mediocrity

Cool, now all the spyware/adware/virus writers will have value-added gifts hidden inside the core install available on every FTP site on earth. Then the news headlines start spewing "OS X Virus!".

Way to destroy what was once a sterling reputation, Apple!

Jun 11, 05 - 01:43 pm Comment from: Robert Paulsen

Robert Paulsen is not my real name, I took it from a character in fight club. My email is a random hotmail account that i rarely log into and my IM is a screenname that i never use. Neither of the accounts has any of my real information on it. Do you think I'm still at risk?

Jun 11, 05 - 01:46 pm Comment from: Architect

I have been forced to use Dells for years because AutoCAD is Windows-only. I wish I could use my Mac for everything. If Macintels can run AutoCAD (via Windows) at good performance, I personally know over a hundred architects at several high-level firms that will buy Macs instead of Dells. I know this is slightly off-topic, but most architects want to run Macs, but have to run AutoCAD. If we can do both on a Mac with the Intel switch, Apple will see unimagined growth. Almost every industry has similar issues - one or two goddam Windows-only apps stopping them from going with Apple Macs

As for some PCs running this odd Mac OS X for Intel version - hopefully people will see what they've been missing all these years and they'll wish to buy a Mac next.

Jun 11, 05 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Mac Daddy

It would surprise me if Apple hasn't considered the possiblility of this contingency. In his keynote, Steve Jobs stated that Apple will want the developer kits back, and I believe he also stated that the kits are not for the general public. With that in mind and the limited distribution of these kits, I suspect that Apple would have embedded a unique serial number in the OS code for each developer, which would allow them to track down the source of a leak.

Jun 11, 05 - 02:13 pm Comment from: pessimist

Windows people are a stubborn lot. I doubt that they would put enough files into their bootleg OS X to be sufficient to put it through it's paces and even if they did put enough data, they prolly wouldn't bother working the OS hard to get the big picture.

You ever ask Windows people about their experiences with iTunes now that they're all using iTunes to load their iPods? What do they say? The grim reality is that they mostly say they haven't used the iTunes app for jack squat in the way of file management, right? Even though it's all right there at their disposal. To most of Windows users iTunes is just a store and a CPU hogging file transfer tool and they mostly stick to their Windows apps for all other music file management.

I have little faith that they'll look very hard, even if they did try a bootleg copy of OS X to run on their PC. I talk to these folks all the time. They are stubborn buggers.

Jun 11, 05 - 02:26 pm Comment from: LISTEN UP!!!

to get this working you'd need all the actual program code to compile as a intel chip based app...

now then...

who has all that code?...

all the code for an application?...

it would take a bloody idiot to try and steal that as it would mean a long prison term if caught...

Jun 11, 05 - 02:38 pm Comment from: M. T. MacPhee

Architect:

Have you tried VectorWorks? Depending on your work flow, it can run rings around autocad.

Jun 11, 05 - 02:41 pm Comment from: justified

From Steve Jobs' keynote:

"I can confirm the rumors that every release of Mac OS X has been compiled for both PowerPC and Intel . . . "

Note he did NOT say "build." He said "release." Could that mean that our Mac OS X install CDs/DVDs would, theoretically, install on an Intel-based PC?

Jun 11, 05 - 03:07 pm Comment from: me

Try before you buy?

Ha.

Doesn't he mean steal before you steal again?

Jun 11, 05 - 03:21 pm Comment from: Ian

Everyone should quit trying these put forward these hoaxes. I know for a fact that Apple has built in something to stop the developer release from running on anything other than the Macintel boxes.

Jun 11, 05 - 04:13 pm Comment from: Jamie Kelly

I will always buy Apple Hardware. Always have, always will.

Mr. Ive is a genius.

genius.

Jun 11, 05 - 04:20 pm Comment from: DeathByMilkfloat

M. T. MacPhee and Architect:

Second M. T. McPhee's opinion. I have an architect colleague who worked on the sliding roof section of the Cardiff Millennium Stadium in Wales (big prestigious sports stadium). He used Vectorworks, others on the project used AutoCAD. He was getting work done in a fraction of the time. He converted the AutoCAD files, did his stuff, then converted them back. No-one was any the wiser. A fine example of industry standards retarding progress and productivity.

Jun 11, 05 - 05:12 pm Comment from: Virtual-Twin

Yeah, either there is a unique serial to each copy so that Apple can track down the source, or Apple is doing this knowingly...

Jun 11, 05 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Crazy, but it HAS to be on purpose

I guess Apple doesn't have to worry about losing buyers. Anyone who will accept an illegal OS with no support at all isn't a good customer to have anyway!

Jun 11, 05 - 06:09 pm Comment from: IT Manager

Oh...this is too much. If I get my hands on this, I'm going to format and install OSX on everybody's pee cee at work. hahaha.....right before I renew my expensive anti-virus and spyware subscriptions! Heck, I'lll push my winblows servers over to it as well and save big $ on licensing.

Jun 11, 05 - 07:53 pm Comment from: Sam

I'm not going to download it, but I have to say that this is the first piece of software I've been seriously tempted to pirate since I was an adolescent.

I doubt it's intentional, since this release will almost certainly not be the polished, zippy final release. In addition, it will certainly have an EXTREMELY limited set of drivers, so probably won't run on most chipsets, motherboards, ethernet chips, etc., but if you happen to have something exactly like the devkit PC, it would probably run.

Jun 11, 05 - 08:07 pm Comment from: If it's not polished and doesn't support most PCs

then that makes it even more harmless to Apple... and that means it's even MORE likely that the leak is intentional.

Kinda like the record co's didn't mind trying iTunes since it was only on Mac at first. A limited experiment.

Jun 11, 05 - 08:36 pm Comment from: nnes

Society is full of cheap bastards. If we can get it for free, trust me we will. What good is it to Apple that everyone uses OSX and they only get a nickel for their investment.

Jun 11, 05 - 08:38 pm Comment from: Bad News

Virtual-Twin wrote:

"Yeah, either there is a unique serial to each copy so that Apple can track down the source,"...

A unique serial makes no difference, the genie is out of the bottle. Even if Apple sends out the Gestapo and several legions of lawyers (and manages to string a few well-deserving geeks up by their tiny balls), there's no going back. This OS will be on the Net from here on out.

..."or Apple is doing this knowingly..."

If a non-expiring, non-Apple-hardware-specific OS was leaked intentionally, it would be the biggest screw-up Apple has ever done. Whoever authorized it, even if it was Steve Jobs himself, should be fired.

The only possible saving grace is if the OS checks in with Apple periodically, and disables or destroys itself if things don't pass. You'll still have thieves who'd get by indefinitely by not going online, but the number would probably be small enough not to matter.

Jun 11, 05 - 09:13 pm Comment from: mike

I doubt it's intentional, since this release will almost certainly not be the polished, zippy final release.

I think that means it WAS intentional. Why did Apple even have to hold a press conference then? They could have just told the developers and kept it a secret...

I admit they wouldn't want a Mac user worrying about the 'obsolete' factor.. but really with Rosetta, you don't have to worry about 'obsolete'.. Future software will come on two versions for a transitionary period..

This WWDC announcement was so the dev kits could go out.. and a scrappy unsupported version of Tiger could be leaked to the net.. Dell users can install it if they want and they can have a Mac.

What's the catch? The catch is Apple makes no money.. but the number of people able to pull of the 'DellMac' thing is so small they don't really care..

The hardcore guys will tell their friends about OS X but will have to pay for the optimized/supported version of the OS, through Software Update.

Jun 11, 05 - 09:46 pm Comment from: DaninPgh

A lot of people have wondered why Apple made such a public announcement of their switch to Intel rather than trying to keep it a secret until they were ready to ship a product. IMHO Apple isn't worried about a few geeks installing this developer release that will be unsupported on any machine in Jan. on their DIY PCs.

Jun 11, 05 - 10:20 pm Comment from: IONLYUSEOSX

HP is going to build clones for Apple to address the low end market and to hopefully offer a great business computer virus free. Mac OS X will be in every retail store by the end of the year. They are testing the retail channels with HP by using the iPod as a test run. I think HP has the best chance as the first cloner given the relationship they now has with Apple. I also think HP and Intel want a new OS partner instead of Microsoft. That way if Microsoft threatens to pull the OS they can say, sure go right ahead. We have Apple anyway.

The developer Intel verson of OS X will most likely have an experation date, so even if it makes it to the net, folks will need to purchase the real deal and or computer at some point.

Jun 11, 05 - 10:21 pm Comment from: skunkworker

they should release Tiger for intel right now!

Jun 11, 05 - 10:24 pm Comment from: Al

The people who download pirated software et cetera, do not pay for anything they can get for free.

Pirates are not potential customers.

Jun 11, 05 - 10:28 pm Comment from: matt

Al, you're generalizing a bit too much there.

Some people pirate only because they can't obtain what they want in some other way. This includes pre-release software/music/movies/games (e.g. Mac OS X Tiger), things that aren't yet released in their country (music/movies/games), etc.

For thigns like Mac OS X or other obscure things like this, the interest will be rather high, and those that would otherwise buy everything may consider pirating.

Jun 11, 05 - 10:39 pm Comment from: mike

Pirates are not potential customers

---

who cares? The vast majority of OS X users are totally legit.. and will continue to be.. the only difference is if there is anecdotal evidence that pC users prefer OS X and can install it.. they might as well buy a mac next time they go computer shopping.

Furthermore.. even if it's stolen, the REAL # of mac users goes up..

"We know Apple just announced they’re going Intel, but AMD would just like you to know that by the time Apple’s moved over to x86 in 2007, they’re planning on having quad-core CPUs on the market—and we ain’t just talking dual-core Hyperthreaded devices. Later plans include scalability to up to 32 processors in their devices..."

Apple sucks for this Intel fiasco, but the poetic justice is that they jumped on the wrong ship.

Enjoy that copy of OSX cheapskate PCers.

But, remember to remove it before the 8th day. Seriously.

If you still have it on your Winbox it will 'call home' - again, between the 8th and 29th day - and DL a 'present' - that will 'evacuate' everything from your entire HD. The DL happens on a random day, to hide any culpability. Buh-Bye to all your pr0no, bootlegs, and stolen MP3s! Ooopseeez!

Do you feel lucky? Will you be getting 'Freedom Fried'? Or FF2, 3, 4...
