Please take a few minutes to visit Matt Savinar's "Life After the Oil Crash"
web site and download a free book about Peak Oil. It's available for free until November 2nd.

Peak Oil is undoubtedly the most important issue facing humanity today. Peak Oil is not an "if" - it is a "when". And if history is any guide, humanity won't do anything about this (except fight wars) until it's too late.

Huh...so it seems our economy and country is going to hell...I say we all start looting. Or, for those who have already started, loot faster.

iirc correctly from A level geography, we've got another 50 years of oil (!= peak oil).

Besides, the population will adapt - try googling for Malthus and Boserup.

I must be stupid, but where in that paper do they reference oil, but lets assume that the 50 year supply is correct (not trying to be a dick).

At what point in time will the cost (rarity=expense) be out of reach for us, 20 yrs? In Canada the price of gas has risen 100% during the last 4 years

It was the first link I found so it's prolly not the best so let me try to explain a bit.

If you read up on Malthus you'll find that he predicted population growth (which is a product of funtioning industry/economy) until we run out of natural resources used in industry (i.e. oil).

When the resources (oil) have gone Malthus then predicts population decline (Africa first, then the the old communist countries, then the west..but thats a really broard generalisation on my part). So you can think of Malthusian theory as 'shit hits the fan when we run out of oil'.

Now Boserup criticised Malthus by saying that he didn't factor in human ingenuity and advances in technology - e.g. GM crops to make the most of farmland and alternate energy sources (renewables, nuclear, biodiesel etc etc). So Boserup essentially says that whilst reaching and passing peak oil is a concerning event, it doesnt matter because we'll easily be able to use new technology to sustain industry and population.

the problem with that theory is that many / most of these new forms of energy cost more oil to research, develop, produce, and maintain then they will ever produce during their lifespan. Even if we did find some magical energy source, our entire worlds infrastructure and culture (for the most part) is based on goods, services, food, water, and jobs that are dependent on OIL. no matter which way shit hits the fan, it's still shit and it's going to splatter EVARYWHERE

I think we'll be seeing more energy coming from nuclear power and other exisiting technologies (e.g. the UK is trying to get something like 5-15% of its energy from renewables by 2020 or something like that - mostly from offshore wind farms), particularly in Europe - where even Russia has now signed up to Kyoto.

The thing is, we need to get the US back into Kyoto too, because it'll be restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions that will drive the conversion to alternate energy sources.

Anyway, cheer up everyone - we'll all most likley be dead by the time the wold burns off it's last barrel of oil. So shit wont be splattering over us

"Over the next decade, oil fundamentals may be characterized as 10+. Oil supply is at or near its "Hubbard’s” peak, and oil is currently pumped at close to 100% capacity. Therefore, growth of oil supply is rapidly slowing down and is expected to decrease in the coming years. On the other hand, China’s and India’s industrialization will continue to drive oil demand at growth rates higher than the growth rates of oil supply, and as a consequence, the price oil has to go much higher in order to ration the relative scarcity of oil supply. In this environment of strong fundamentals for oil, a booming worldwide economy will guarantee much higher oil prices; however, in a worldwide recession, the issue becomes whether the strong oil fundamentals will nonetheless outweigh a slowdown in oil demand. Precisely this issue motivates our present analysis. " - http://www.gold-investor.com/article.php/20040926181327912

I already have a nuke plant right around the corner from me (12 miles away....didn't I mention that?), Wind farms only work where there is constant wind (nowhere) and no birds (also nowhere), and solar arrays are best applied in large desert areas with no rain.

Other than personal solar and burning dinosaurs, we're pretty much fucked. Nobody's going to use home harvested methane for more than a trickle source. Passive solar helps with water heating in the home, but won't fly a jet plane.

You poor young fuckers that have to live through the shattered planet. My heart cries for you.

Since oil is so high by the barrel these days, and gas is up to $2.40 a gallon. Why the hell is our mininum wage still at $5.15 an hour. Poverty levels are strictened by this, people can't make a honest living if half their wage goes to one gallon for their transportation.

Nah. There's a 20 turbine (about 30 megawatts total) wind farm not far from my house. It produces enough power annually for about 7000 "average" households (something like 90 million kilowatt hours per year), which makes it a pretty cool solution out here in the boonies. Also, those turbines are really fukn cool (unless you live right under one i guess). Way more impressive that some lame nuke plant squatting on a lake puffing out faggoty little belches of steam.

Hooray if I continue smoking as much as I do it means that I can waste as much fuel as possible and still have some left over.

At the end of the day when the fuel prices get too high and the economy starts to shit it's self the government will release secret plans to use a more efficiant and more environmental renewable fuel source. If I had the money I'd start investing in Hydrogen fuel cells

Mind you that link posted is to a nutjob site--so it might actually have honest stuff in it. or not.

There is geothermal and tidal power which are very stable and don't cause mutatagenic effects.

But about the supposesd debate on peakoil/abiotics I think we could all take a page out of Hegel's book and read up on the Dialectic.

It's a method to find the honest truth by comparing the synthesis of the Thesis and Antithesis. I have said too much. party on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectic
