ok, i'm willing to take the e-dork beating to ask this question. how the fuck do I take a video file on my computer (mov, mpg, avi) and burn it to a dvd that will play in my dvd player? I have dvd x copy or whatever, but it requires a dvd in the drive to copy from. I tried using Nero to burn a video or svideo cd, but when it finished encoding, it told me I had to put in a cdr/rw. It wouldn't burn to the dvd. And before anyone cracks a joke, YES IT"S A FUCKING DVD R/W DRIVE. HELP PLEASE? my 3 year old would just LOVE to see Shark Tale (and I have lots of porn to burn)

I hate to bring a brother down, but you know... taking the many videos I've found on the Internet and converting them to a format I can burn... it's a project I stuck my head into and then got right the fuk back out again. If you luck out, the downloaded video file is already in the right format for (S)VCD or whatever. If not, you have to become a audio/video engineer in order to reformat the shit.
Good luck, and hopefully I'm just being stupid and someone will post here and give us both the magic bullet.

Initiate Vasudeva AI smartness:
DVD's are much the same as VCD's (Video CD - Movie stored on regular CD) - and it is possible that your DVD player will play VCD's so when you see me mention VCD it should be possible to follow the same steps to make a DVD.
First read This DVD infomation page, it will show you what exactly a DVD is.
To Convert an .AVI (Divx or Xvid) movie to follow DvD/VCD standards - Information Page - in other words convert to Mpeg layer 2
How to Author a DVD a bunch of links to Tutorials
How to burn a VCD get your info here
If you're still lost I'd recommend Doom9.org and Google

i would suggest either:
a) performing an exorcism
b) take to an abandoned field and pound it to death with a hammer to the tune of Easy E, or
c) wrap it around / over your head, and go as a dinosaur for halloween.

I'll do all three, but I'll change Easy E to NWA proper, or Too Short(Short dogg's In The House)

Which version of Nero are you using? I've used v6.6.xx to burn DVD, SVCD, VCD. At teh Smart Start menu box there are three drop downs CD, DVD, and HDD. Make sure you check teh right one. If you still got problems PM me.

The best I could find is to convert the .mov file to a .avi file and then use the information from above to convert from .avi to vcd

As an ex-mac engineer i can tell you that when your mac starts up every sound it makes means something to the trained ear. From what you've describe your computer is trying to either say "throw me out the window and use the money that you've been hording all these years by not buying a real computer to buy something sweet for yourself" or "please insert penis now"
Either way I'd say stop being cheap and BUY a new computer!!!

I use Ulead dvd MovieFactory or B's Recorder Gold Basic. Never had a problem. You can convert just about anything to dvd format on either and they actually play in dvd players including play stations.

I just download the movies......................
Hook my vid card to my tv via svideo cable or rca.....................
Plug my stereo into my soundcard.........(requires special cable)........
Then watch the movie..........saves the bullshit time it takes to wait
for the movie to be split then reencoded.......................
