I now have all the box sets. The 'original' non-CGI enhanced version, the THX remastered edition, the late 90's Special Edition and now the original trilogy DVD (which is like the Special Edition with more CGI fuckery).
Much time and energy has been spent on the internet debating the wisdom of George Lucas's changes to the original trilogy over the years. Did Han shoot first? Would it have been better to let Jabba be introduced in 'Return of the Jedi' rather than in 'A New Hope'? Was Cloud City grander with more windows and open-air terraces, etc.?
I didn’t mind most of the changes Lucas made in the special edition. Some of the new establishing shots were cool and the enhanced Death Star dogfight in Ep. IV was very nice. But I think that some of the changes to the new DVD are completely unnecessary, especially the closing of ‘Jedi,’ where the young Anakin replaces the older actor from the original release.
I know Star Wars is Lucas’s baby, and he can do whatever the fuk he wants, but I think he’s tinkered a bit too much. What do y’all think?

when I finished jedi, and the last thing I saw was that FUCK anakin, I wanted to start crying. I think that Lucas has lost his fucking marbles. I understand that he doesn't really give a crap what anybody thinks, but COME ON!!!! at least leave an option on the new dvd to play the movie without all the additions. That would have made everybody happy, but NO, he has to put that twit in the old movie and scar a classic film for life.
can you tell I'm bitter about this?

As far as I'm concerned, the liscense plate reads THX 1138, Uncle George is behind the wheel and it's his fukin bus and he'll drive it anywhere he pleases.
I will reserve judgement until the entire story is told. I'm a fanboy but not a fanatic, and any star wars movie beats the hell out of most shit released recently.
nuff said.

Mediocre rip-off of a Kurosawa film, at best. And retroactively fucking with movies is like painting over old paintings when you learn new techniques. |

They inserted him at the end of 'Jedi,' standing alongside Yoda and Ben.

The Star Wars Series :
- unbelievable in the 70's
- great in the 80's
- still worth a watch in the 90's (the originals - not the new rubbish)
- not that good any more
Even with the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia I find it hard to watch these nowadays.
I agree that "updating" a film quite often makes it worse. One of my favourite films - Blade Runner - lost it's appeal when the Director's Cut removed the Film Noir voiceover from Harrison Ford.
If a film was successful originally then why try to "improve" it? It's kind of like Ricing a film - and that's not my style.

I'll agree w/ all that, except i liked Blade Runner without teh voiceover, that was 'dumbing down'
