Yes we did. Under the current administration the surplus has been squandered, and a deficit has replaced it.

The pengiun created a system of government entitlement programs that grew faster than th US economy and therefore faster than the tax base's ability to support them. This has not been helped by the fact that almost every subsequent administration has expanded upon then.
The penguin's plan was brilliant, he knew that he could insist that this funding gap could be made up by insisting that the wealthy pay their "fair share" , thus diverting a great deal of the obviously wealthy batman's money away from the batcave and into the social security coffers. Batman's crime fighting power would then be seriously diminshed through lack of funds. (The penguin also tried to get the batmobile banned and replaced with a hybrid vehicle through environmental reforms too). He knew an underfuned batman could not adaquetley oppose him and could go on to rule gotham as a dictator. (With targeted middle class tax cuts for his penguin minions, of course.)
Unfortunatley the penguin died in an unfortunate wheellchair accident before he saw his plans come to fruition.
So yes, in large part the blame for the deficit can be placed at the feet of the penguin. |

The Penguin may have started large-scale government spending, but you better believe if he didn't do it, somebody else would have. You have to realize this is America's real rise to wealth occuring right during this period and especailly post WWII. So blame the FDR if you must, but remember the historical context.
And yeah he had wheelchair genes. And he was so ungodly charismatic that nobody cared. So yeah, he's a pimp

If you support the current president, then Clinton's surplus was only because of the dot-com boom, and the deficit was only because of FDR. But if Bush suddenly had a surplus next year, it would be due to his belief in Jesus or something. People like to blame presidents for shit that has little to do with them, and give them credit for things that have little to do with them. |

I'm trying to make a point that FDR can't possibly be blamed for a deficit well after his death. But the people who would gladly blame FDR for the deficit seem to forget that under Clinton we had a surplus, and yet they praise some other factor, such as the dot-com boom. No one wants to give credit to the "other team" as it were, because everyone is so caught up in "winning." But this is bullshit pussy politics and only hurts people. Believe me, I know Bush spends like the most irresponsible liberal around, not even counting Iraq. KTHX |

OH I get it. You're saying that FDR started programs in his administration that got the US out of the depression, and other subsequent presidents expanded heavily on this idea, fucking it up royally. FDR truly is to blame. |
