Recently my city has been tainted by police brutality, and for the past few days I've been poking around to find news coverage to post on the swarm.

I have not found any coverage about the incidents, and that scares me a bit.

But I did find something that may seem thought provoking to y'all.

About a century and a half ago, Canada's top cop (Sir Robert Peel) had a number of principals issued to all members of the newly formed London (not the one in England) Metropolitan police force. Suprisingly the most important admonition related to the control of policemen's temper.

"He (the police Officer) must remember", wrote Peel, "that there is no qualification so indispensable as the perfect command of his temper. He must never allow himself to be moved in the slightest degree by any language or threats that may be used. He must also be cautious not to interfere idly or unnecessary with the public order to make a display of his authority and when required to act, he will do so with decision, boldness and impartiality."

I also found this gem
The Ontario Police Commission Codes of Conduct

- He must realize that he is essentially a peace officer, and as such must see to it that the Queen's peace is not broken. His first duty is the prevention of crime.

- In his contact with the public he should be civil, firm when occasion demands, but never officious. The over-zealous or meddlesome officer is a nuisance, not only to the public but to his superiors.

- He should not interfere upon a slight pretext but only when he is reasonably certain that there's cause for police action.

-Patience and courtesy should be shown even when sorely tried by well-meaning persons with gratuitous advice; with stories of domestic difficulties and by eccentric persons with fancy grievances.

- In the discharge of his duties as a police officer he should judiciously regard the rights of others.

- A man has the right to the safety and freedom of his person. Any interference with that right by way of assault, battery or imprisonment, if not justified or authorized is wrong.

-An attempt or offer to do harm to a person of another which might have succeeded if persisted in or verbal or gestured threat couple with present ability to carry it out will amount to an assault.

- The provisions of most search warrants do not authorize search through the clothing worn by a man found in the house being searched, and such a search will be conducted at the officer's peril.

- Any complete restraint, no matter how short, upon the liberty of a person, will, in the absence of lawful justification, amount to false imprisonment, whether such restraint be physical or by exercise of authority.

- Keeping a man locked up in a room, or holding him for questioning, unless he willingly submits, are included.

- An officer must, before trespassing upon a person another, be sure that he is justified in so doing, either by way of defence of himself or property which he is entitled to protect, or that he has judicial authority for his action.

- No police officer should attempt to force his way into premises against the will of the owner unless he has a search warrant.

- A man may retain possession of his goods, unless the officer is entitled to seize them under a search warrant that clearly extends to those goods.

- Every police officer should remember at all times that he is the guardian of the honour of the force which he represents and that any laxity or merited criticism reflects directly on the force as well as upon himself."

Does reflect the conduct of the police in your area?
How effective is your local constabulary?

i hate to say, because i hate cops as a rule(past experience) but teh coppers in Madison, WI are fair, thoughtful, and helpful...and as a landowner, i'd call them for help before i'd break out teh SKS or Glock(might as well save 18 cents on a .40 cal(10mm) reload

i used to hate cops, but that's when I was selling drugs, doing drugs, and driving whilst doing drugs.

Now I remain in my house when I get high, I never carry, and so my opinion of the 5.0 have increased slightly. I understand why many people hate the police, but if I got in trouble, I'd be sure to call the coppers to my pad (after hiding the bong)

Haha. Those Cop Ethics sure are funny (ludicrous). I think that might be how some people -- the ones who want to be cops for the good reasons -- feel for the first few years, before they realize people are assholes and power is easy to abuse.
