I went to see I Robot yesterday (under duress), I was a bit apprehensive due to the fact that most novels adapted to cinema usually leave teh viewer bitchen that "the movie was nothing like the novel".
While Asimov's SF has many fans, I am not one of them (not enough sex or 'splosians) and the thought of watching a movie based on a boring series of books gave me a headache.
Suprisingly, Hollywood's practice of recycling/bastardizing novels has paid off, this movie was actually watchable, little thin on story and plot, but enough clever action sequences to justify the ticket/popcorn/bladder-busting superfuckinghuge drink price.
Any you guys see it yet, what did you think?

A lot of people will bash this movie for not being "like the story it takes its name from"

I saw this, and despite whateverthefuck ... um, it's actually pretty decent sci-fi. I wasn't expecting much, but nevertheless I definitely got more than I was expecting.

With a slight amount of research, and maybe even reading the fucking book, you might realize that I, Robot is nothing more than a collection of short stories. I haven't seen the movie, but I heard that the movie is based off of 2 or 3 of the stories, wrapped around the original script which was called Hardwired.
I don't have a problem with this. Since it is a collection, I think the general idea of it being in the same universe and taking some of the elements from the stories makes much more sense than taking a good book (Dune) and making a retarded movie with it (Dune).
Voice Weapons...WHAT THE FUCK?!?
Now I wish the BBC would have gotten off their asses and made the HR Geiger version (*drool*):

YOU DID NOT SEE THE FUCKING MOVIE!
Where did you get the impression that I had never read I Robot, all I said was that it was boring.
The few similarities between the book/movie:
U.S. Robotics
The movie centers on robots built by United States Robotics, the corporation whose full name is U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men, Inc. in Asimov's stories. In the movie, the corporation is run by Lawrence Robertson. In the short story collection, Lawrence Robertson receives only a brief mention in the introduction as the being the first president of the corporation. In the stories, several generations of his offspring run the company.
The character Susan Calvin
Susan Calvin, the robopsychologist for U.S. Robots, was a central character of the story collection. Calvin was brilliant, logical, and strong-willed, but was not considered attractive or even very feminine. In the movie, Calvin is portrayed by the young and beautiful actress Bridget Moynahan.
The character Alfred Lanning
In Asimov's stories, Lanning is the Director of Research at U.S. Robots. In the movie, Lanning is the creator of the NS-5 robot, and dies near the beginning of the story.
The Nestor series of robots
The movie features the NS-5 robot, successor to the NS-4 in the Nestor series. Asimov's story "Little Lost Robot" concerned a robot in the Nestor series, the NS-2, which has a modified First Law which allows it to allow a human being to come to harm through inaction.
A police detective who is uncomfortable with robots
In the movie, Will Smith plays detective Del Spooner, who has a deep-seated distrust of robots. There are no such detectives in Asimov's short stories, but Asimov also wrote a series of novels featuring positronic robots, and there is a detective in them named Elijah Baley who is not very fond of robots. Baley is not alone in his feelings about robots; robots on Earth are blamed for stealing jobs and causing unemployment. In the novel The Caves of Steel, a roboticist is murdered, but rather than hunting down a robot, Baley is paired with one as a partner in his murder investigation. Baley's partner, the robot Daneel Olivaw, manages to change his perspective on robots, and reappears as a central figure in several later novels.
The film started as a screenplay titled "Hardwired" by screenwriter Jeff Vintar My point was that they took the good and tossed the shit, added Asimov's characters in the rewrite. Jeff Vintar was "thrown a bone" with the writing credit cause he probably pitched an idea that they could "attach" their Asimov property to.
The rewrite was done by Akiva Goldsman who wrote:
A Beautiful Mind, Practical Magic, Lost In Space, Batman & Robin, A Time to Kill, Batman Forever, Silent Fall, and The Client.
Produced:
Mindhunters, Starsky and Hutch, Deep Blue Sea, and Lost in Space.
There is your research, go eat a bowl of fuck.

1. I said I didn't see the movie.
2. I also said it was based on some of the stories in I, Robot, which it is, no?
3. I also said it was based on a screenplay named Hardwired, which it is, no?
4. Fuck you
5. I wasn't complaining about your comment, or even the fact it was a chopped up movie. I was complaining about people throwing around comments about the sanctity of the source material when obviously next to noone on the fukin planet has read it except hardcore Sci-Fi geeks.

I agree, purist whine about that shit all the time, but I don't see them freaking out about LOTR. Granted Hollywood does fuck up alot of good book/movies, but sometimes they actually manage to improve on what the author couldn't visualize 30 years ago.

I haven't seen it yet. Mainly becuse the original books didn't feature much action - they were more along the lines of a space-age Sherlock Holmes.
For some reason Will Smith doesn't strike me as a pensive, deductive sleuth - don't know why.

Not bad. I didn't delete it.
I didn't read the Asimov stories, but I have seen WIll Smith in a decent movie or two. This wasn't outside his usual range.

I have finally seen this movie ( I don't rent movies, I just wait for them on cable- I aint paying for them twice. )
It was not as bad as I thought it would be, and nowhere near as bad as it could have been. It was really just another Will Smith sci-fi shoot 'em up, including the obligatory futuristic car chase in a tunnel.
The only Asimov I could see was in the character names, and the robots were very obvious forerunners to the robot army in the last few Star Wars movies.

That's what I was figuring - haven't seen it yet for that reason. It's interesting how Gothmog pointed out that they took an existing script (Hardwired) and piggybacked on Asimov's title - not sure I like that.
BTW, SickBoy65 (wherever you are) - LOTR sucked pure ass.
