1) how do you "rip" tracks off a cd and onto your hard drive?

First, get a claw hammer, glue, and some righteous weed. Use the hammer to tear the songs off the CD that you want, but be careful. You don't want to scratch it. Use the glue to attach the songs to your hard drive. Use the righteous weed to answer the second question.

To answer your questions
1) If you want to rip them to MP3's, I use musicmatch jukebox. You can go and download the free version, and it will do you just fine. It will even access the internet for you when you pop ina new CD, and pre-fill the song name, album name, artist, and a shitload of other nice things to save time.
2)Who is "WE, and where is "HERE"...If I know more, I may be able to help.

1) how do you "rip" tracks off a cd and onto your hard drive? If you're in Windows, download CDex and use that. It'll rip the tracks and encode them. It may or may not come with the LAME MP3 encoder, but I'm sure the docs will expand on that.
Or you can just play the tracks in WinAmp, which has a nifty "Write to Disk" output plugin, then take the resulting .wavs and use an encoder to get them into .mp3 format.

Whether natedogmiller prefers to take it up the ass or not is only relevant if he is looking for consenting male partners for personal sexual gratification. I cannot in good conscience recommend a ripper without first asking you to clarify your request. I'll begin by asking why? why do you want to rip tracks from a cd to your computer? if your intent is to merely take up space on your hard drive with extraneous 1s and 0s, then by all means see the responses listed above. However, if your intent is to produce quality reproductions of your cds, I'll first remind you that the copying/reproducing of copyrighted material is against the law and may in fact support terrorism. After which I will go on to suggest that you either purchase or otherwise obtain a copy of a "real" ripper. That free shit will only allow you to rip at what they call "cd quality". This could possibly the biggest sack of of fucking lies ever told by a woman. 128kbps is NOT cd quality. Well... yeah I guess maybe it is if your cds are scratched and chipped and otherwise unplayable.
So, you see... I can help you but, you need to upfront and honest and forthcoming about your intentions. I cannot help you if you lie to me.
as for that why are we here crap... I think Lucky may be on to something with that google search tip.

Right on, which is why I rip my shit at 256kbps or 320kbps -- the max bitrate offered by any decent free tool like the ones mentioned above.
Ogg and its proponents (I am not not one) claim 128kbps .oggs are CD quality. I leave this debate open.

Ogg is still a lossy compression, so you still have problems w/ that. if you're looking for CD quality look into the following formats: shorten, flac, or monkey
i'm sure there are others, those are just the ones i remember off the top of my head, also just search for +"lossless compression" +audio |

dBpowerAMP Music Converter. It rips and coverts between formats. It installs default codecs for .WAV and .MP3 files. You can download more codecs at the website.
