Anybody have an idea of how to set up a stop motion rig? My son's wanting to get into it. (Transformers, claymation, et al.) I've got a webcam, digital camera, tripod, etc. I need software and....well a clue, as far as getting started goes.
I'd really appreciate some help guys.

What digital camera do you have? Some makes/models allow you to shoot tethered to your pc so each shot you take you can instantly see on your screen.
I havent done stopmotion with digital, but the premise is the same as when i tried it, so it wont be hard, and should be even easier for you.
I'm doing a job taking portraits of about 30 toddlers this morning so assuming i survive, once i get back i can do a little digging for you.
The simplest method i can think of right now with what you might have is just use your camera normally setup on the tripod,taking shots and moving whatever, then putting all the shots in sequence into something like windows movie maker, slideshow type style with a interval of a second or less between each image. I'm not sure how suited movie maker is, but i have a feeling you may be able to do this either more reliably in virtualdub, or a different program,but i'm posting from my phone and its not the quickest/easiest platform to look into stuff properly, so unless someone comes up with the goods in the meantime, i'll try and help later.

virtualdub method, tis some good free software.
Virtual Dub Method
1. Virtual Dub will be used for saving the multiple image files as a movie, ready for editing with another program
2. Have all your pictures in 1 place, all named in the correct order
3. In Virtual Dub go file > open, from the File type drop down select 'Image Sequence'. Select the first image, Virtual Dub will then automatically import all other pictures that follow in numerical order (E.g, DCM1000, DCM1001, DCM1002)
4. Go video > frame rate and choose a frame rate for your movie. The higher the frame rate, the more images are shown per second (25FPS will show 25 pictures per second). Change the frame rate and keep testing until you are happy with it.
5. Change video and audio compression if needed.
6. Finally go file > save as avi. Now your images are a movie sequence, ready for editing in another program such as Windows Movie maker, Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere.
