so i figured i had no better place to ask but here. i have to admit, of all the places i frequent on the intrawebs, the swarm definitely has a higher concentration of people who know what the fuck they're talking about.

ass kissing aside, i've just recently begun learning CSS. i've got 15+ years of design experience (mostly Pshop, ) and have stumbled my way through some basic HTML projects by mostly modifying templates or existing material. but, sadly , i never got into or studied any sort of programming (save for an Apple IIGS 20+ years ago). so in an attempt to better myself, and allow me to better control and understand website design, i've started to learn CSS.

i had a crash course this weekend with some experienced friends, and i feel like i've learned a shitload already. so, what i'm asking of the swarm is some further guidance. are there any resourceful websites or forums i need to know about or keep on hand? tutorials, cheat sheets, anything that might help. i would greatly appreciate any guidance or help anyone can offer. thanks in advance.

Oh god there are so much CSS on the internet that you will barely know where to begin.

I will paste the world's supply of useful links (well, the ones in my bookmarks folder anyway), but I should also suggest that you look at the stylesheets of all the web pages you find where they've done something cool.

So here we go:

For me, this was the single most helpful CSS tutorial/demonstration forever. It's a shortcut to your first CSS epiphany:

http://redmelon.net/tstme/box_model/

This is an awesome site full of CSS (and other web-design) code snippets:

http://snippets.dzone.com/tag/css

CSS shorthand guide:

http://www.dustindiaz.com/css-shorthand/

And here's a really sexy CSS optimizer that I use all the time to clean up messy stylesheets:

http://www.cleancss.com/?lang=en

This is an article called "6 keys to understanding modern CSS layouts". The reason I like it is because it deals with things like the box model and also how to size text using EM's, which for me was another epiphany moment for writing stylesheets - you'll never size text in pixels again, and nor should you :>

http://snook.ca/archives/html_and_css/six_keys_to_understanding_css_layouts/

Oh and I just quickly G'd-up an article about the box model and why you might need to hack it:

http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=E0989953B6F20B41

Finally, here's my favorite CSS-template/layout site, just because it shows that you can layout a site pretty much however you like:

http://www.code-sucks.com/css%20layouts/fixed-width-css-layouts/

So there, like GDR said, you should def Google up tutorials and also you should look at other people's code and well, recycle it - how else would you learn?

CSS is definitely the new paradigm, and worth learning.

That being said, good luck vertically centering <div>s

Lefen, thanks a pantload man, thats the sort of info i was hoping for. trust me, google has been my best resource so far, but as you said, there is almost too much info and is a bit overwhelming for a newb. i was just trying to see if anyone could help boil it down to make things a bit easier. thanks again.

very difficult to ensure cross browser rendering as per your design without... wait for it...

workarounds!

how i hate the word, but get used to it with this particular topic!

This is one of the best CSS gallery's among many for inspiration:

http://cssremix.com/

Also, books from sitepoint.com are really good and all the examples are online for download as well as a forum.

The master of web standards Jeffrey Zeldman's site is always a good resource too:

http://www.alistapart.com

I've also got about 150 bookmarks on CSS here as it's my weapon of choice:
