I'm disappointed. But first, some background:
My Hardy box has a 2.8GHz processor, 1GB RAM and an NVIDIA AGP8x card with 256MB video memory. Fairly modest, but I would expect this setup to cope with Linux.
Well. Hardy is just a bit of a mess, isn't it?
To find a starting point is easy, Compiz Fusion is enabled by default and yet not only does it take forever to load once you've logged in, but even modest effects seem to overwhelm my video card, resulting in frustrating delays for things to happen in flashy-graphics-mode. In fact, Compiz seems to be a washout on what I would consider to be a perfectly decent video card. Especially since it seems to particularly dislike playing nicely with Firefox 3b5, making crashes all the more regular while attempting a fancy visual effect.
Ok, so bugger it. I just turned Compiz off. It is experimental after all, but the bugs are obvious and I don't see why it should be on as part of the default install.
So, now we're left with just the Gnome desktop with Metacity and Nautilus. Let me say that after having experience with going directly from Dapper to Hardy, I was sad to see just how sluggish Hardy felt; to the point that I've installed and am using Openbox as my window manager to try and get some of the perceived 'performance' back that I was getting with the previous version. Actually, I'm at the stage where I'm seriously going to look at ditching the Gnome/Openbox combination and move straight into plain Openbox plus a panel app.
I know this is a mini-rant, but I really expected great things from Hardy. You know, it's been pretty hyped up on this internet, and to be fair to it, the whole thing was much easier to setup than the last LTS (Dapper): relevant hardware drivers (including the NVIDIA one), were suggested to me right away and enabling other restricted stuff was no trouble. But surely it says something when I've actually had to move away from the default desktop to Openbox, just to get performance I'm happy with. I'm still a Ubuntu fan and I still enjoy it more than XP, but my feeling towards Hardy is like when you'd run downstairs on Christmas morning expecting a bike, and instead you get, well, not a bike.
If anything, Hardy has made me more interested in other Linux distros, to see if they can do better with the hardware on offer. I think that's just a bit sad when you consider that lots of new Linux users with be introduced to Ubuntu first, probably on similar age machines as mine. Perhaps they will have a negative impression of Linux if their performance expectations are not met first time? I mean, forget having someone set the thing up for you, what about actually using it and having Compiz grey-out and hang your web browser just because you decided to open several Flickr albums at once? It's a shame is all.
So, my fellow LS Ubuntuerz, what's been your experiences?

The only problem I have had so far is that it initially insisted on adding my laptop's full domain name to the hosts file and that essentially locked me out of using sudo.
Once I got the full domain name out of the host file, everything has run groovy.

have not tried 8.04, but you mentioned performance as a concern. have you tried xubuntu?

Yeah I played a bit with Xubuntu 7.10 before I installed Hardy. I thought it was good and especially liked Thunar.
Perhaps I will try both Openbox and the XFCE-desktop, thanks!

this makes me sad, im a big foss / linux fan & user with ubuntu my main distro of choice. still running dapper on my laptop (goes great, but ive been threatening to double up the memory forever) and edubuntu 7.10 on the wee boys dell 3ghz box, full compiz no worries, mame, joypad support, all that jazz...
was gonna keep the laptop running lts releases, maybe minimal install and just build up what i need, lightweight wm and what not (compaq n610c, not new) but might just carry on till the end of dappers support until all thumbs point north...

I'm in 8.04 right now trying to get things in order. The only issues I have right now are trying to get my wacom tablet to work and trying to get the fonts in firefox to not look like ass. Otherwise it's very nice and very easy to use (I'm retarded).
edit:
so dig this, holmes. the 64-bit version sucks as far as getting things to work goes. So right now I'm downloading the 32-bit distro. After that I'm going to install some studio apps and hopefully get my tablet working.

I don't know about this 'Compiz Fusion' nonsense, but I've been on Ubuntu for about 2 years now, and I am using compiz and have been since it was still bleeding alpha. I've been through forks like Beryl and Emerald and seen at least 3 different configuration tools come into fashion and become extinct minutes later. And I can say, in all seriousness, that unless you've got your nvidia driver hosed up somehow, it's probably not compiz.
In fact, from your descriptions? I bet trackerd is wigging out. That's the thing that powers the new desktop search stuff. If you aren't using that, turn it off (or nice it down into nothing).
Oh also, pulseaudio in its current form is a piece of shit, apt-get remove that thing if you ever want to watch youtube again.
I have had Firefox 3b5 issues as well. Are you using gchat? I find it works from the gmail page, but from iGoogle the heavier-weight gchat widget hammers the browser. Clearly a Firefox bug, but there you go. |

I'm running 8.04 amd64 and have been since it was beta. The first issue I had was with the installer messing up grub. It took me a bit to figure out what the correct entries should be but I eventually got the machine up and running. The other main issue I've had is with firefox wanting to take the entire screen and not let me do anything else. Firefox also freezes alot. Anyone running a moderately recent ATI or nVidia card should get Envy. Envy kicks ass and makes installing the proprietary drivers an absolute breeze. In terms of compiz, you need to do a "sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager". After installing this you should now have a new program in System Settings(I forget what it's called). I believe you can also launch it from a command prompt by typing "ccsm". This program lets you enable the cube desktop, wobbly windows and all the stupid useless stuff that it's fun to show to mac users so you can blow raspberries at them.
Also, anyone bitching about compiz should realize that it's still beta(0.5.2 release I believe). I've noticed some video cards work damn well with it, while others have some severe issues. If you have problems it's probably just best to turn it off, disable or uninstall it. Try again when they come out with a new release.

My install of Hairy Hardon went off without a hitch. I had the beta installed, so the full upgrade came down eventually with updated packages. But the laptop it is installed on is very underpowered, so many of the gizmos are turned off. It runs, it gets the job done (email, web) so I can't complain.
I suggest installing it on shittier hardware.
