I'm trying to set up a Mitutoyo depth indicator and have it dump data into an Excel spreadsheet. I have done this before with a keyboard wedge program and an RS-232 port but never with USB.
I have Mitutoyo's data switch and the cable to connect it to the indicator. It has a PS/2 output that I have run into a USB converter and then into the USB port on the laptop... but now I need a keyboard wedge utility that monitors the USB port for data strings that can be translated into keystrokes and dropped into Excel.
I've found a few RS-232 solutions and they all look to be overpriced and do not promise to operate with USB interfaces. I'm having a hard time believing that the opensource community hasn't offered up a wedge solution, either that or they are calling it something different.
Anyone know of a free USb keyboard wedge for this type of application?

I found this page and it explains what I'm trying to do but it no offer solution.
I've used Win-Wedge and GLWedge in the past. In my experience, they do not work with USB and they are seriously overpriced.

Wedge apps are typically proprietary which is why they cost so much. The make of the tool you are trying to use should provide your solution. if they don't then you are setting sail on the brown river without navigation gear.

I know nothing of this shit, but could you just use a usb to serial adapter and set it up like you have done in the past? |

Mitutoyo bundles it with a very expensive and (for me) useless SPC collection suite that costs in the 5 digits.
There are some $200 dollar solutions but I'm looking for free and so far the looking isn't going so well.

There is no serial port on the laptop I've been provided with for this job. Fuck, there is no serial port on must modern laptops.

Would a virtual com port driver for USB work with your existing serial wedge software?

know how you feel, we got laptops at work that specifically have serial ports because all the software we use to communicate with instruments is serial only.
In addition, I went out and got an old ass 800MHz laptop for $40 running WIN98 (even has a DVD drive on it) just so i can continue to run the old DOS based service software...might look into something like that...
I mentioned the adapter because I recently had to get a serial to USB adapter because the DELL docking station I use at work jacks up all the serial port voltages.... It uses a USB port on the computer and you end up with a perfectly functioning serial port, just have to change the USB port to COM 1 and it works.
good luck |

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that you can have any 2 of the following 3 items...
-Highly specialized niche hardware/software
-Free
-Laptops with no serial port
If that's accurate, and I see no reason to suspect it isn't, then this is probably your answer...

I found the answer and it's actually pretty simple so now I feel like a stupid head.
Using a USB to Serial converter like this actually makes the USB port it's plugged into act exactly like a serial port and it tricks WinWedge into seeing a simple serial port.
There are no software keyboard wedges that can use USB data. It has to be run through the stupid usb/serial converter in order to emulate a serial input.
This is rather dumb if you ask me but whatever. Thanks for the suggestions, Swarmlings.
