a film, written and directed by the guy who wrote "From Dusk Til Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money," the 1989 "Punisher," and "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights."
acted in by a bunch of nobodies in 1994, and you've probably never heard of it.
it's about a 12 year old kid, growing up in the ghetto, running drugs.
chess is a plot device.
and it's really fucking good.
think about the above points, and get an idea of the tone of the film. if you're like me, you're thinking that it's full of corny "slang," a dated rap soundtrack full of angry bullshit, ends in a hail of bullets, and has a ham-fisted "point" to make about how the ghetto sucks.
i was wrong, obviously, or i wouldn't be writing about it here.
fresh is michael, a 12 year old black kid in NYC. he's a typical kid in that he likes basketball, girls, and playing chess with his father, only he's a lot different. different in that he runs drugs, his father is a brilliant alcoholic, his sister is selling herself for drugs, and fresh is too fucking smart. at a certain point, he thinks he can see a way to escape from it all.
it's intelligent, well plotted, well shot, decently acted, decently written, and ought to defy most of your expectations.
i downloaded it; search on scrapetorrent for "fresh 1994" and you should find a working torrent.
