Haha, just lying. I love it. But sometimes trying to get help with it sure sucks. Here's a particularly hateable example. I'm looking for help trying to make a searchable archive of about three years' worth of a very high-traffic mailing list -- INTP.
vasudeva> what's a popular piece of software to create and manage a searchable archive of old mail?
ymir> vasudeva: gzip?
vasudeva> hah
vasudeva> i need it accessible through a browser
ymir> I don't know, actually, I'm using mutt *shrugs*
vasudeva> me too
vasudeva> i want to make it available to external users
ymir> well, move them to a different folder
vasudeva> ?
ymir> ah... imap?
vasudeva> http://sources.redhat.com/ml/bug-gnats/1999-10/subjects.html#00020
vasudeva> i'm talking like that
ymir> those are mailing list archives. do you have a mailing list you'd like to put there? it'd be pretty useless if it's not...
vasudeva> i have an archive of a mailing list i'd like to put up
ymir> vasudeva: well, look at the bottom of the page
vasudeva> ymir: yeah, i don't want to use mhonarc. i was hoping to find someone with experience in this field who could impart some knowledge as to which of the available software is right for my purposes, e.g., very lightweight, no need for ongoing list management, etc
ymir> vasudeva: sorry, never had the need for such a thing.
Gah. Thanks for nothing, dickwit.
If anyone out there has any info with which to chime in, please do so.

My first thought on that would be Mailman, check out list.org -- it looks from the Site Administrators docs page that the 'arch' command may be what you're looking for to import your mailbox. |

Mailman is too big for my purposes, I think. It seems more skewed towards collecting mail from an ongoing list, managing users, etc.
The mail is in Outlook .pst format and I'm struggling with disk space issues to convert it to mbox format through IMAP. I think I'm going to go with mhonarc plus htdig, actually. Haha. Like my P120 has enough disk space for all that mail plus the htdig index. What a stupid idea this is. I'm going to end up weeping and clawing my head off with a fork.

I have put a lot of thought into this and, personally, I would have to recommend that you use a spork. That way you can stab AND scoop. Best of both worlds. Other than that, I have no idea. |
