Due to a conversation between a good friend of mine and myself, I decided to put together what I believe is the greatest 25 songs ever recorded and played through my ears. If you disagree with my list, which is probable, instead of throwing stones at me, create your own list and post here.
Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing - 1967
To me, Jimi Hendrix was not the greatest musician by today's standards, but for his time, absolutely. I think Little Wing encompasses everything about a great musician; excellent lyrics, incredible melody, great structure and one of the best written guitar solos of all time.
Listen or Download
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing - 1985
In my opinion, Stevie Ray Vaughn was the greatest blues guitarist to ever record music. A great example is taking one of the greatest blues songs, removing all the vocals and just adding even better guitar than the original writer, Hendrix.
Listen or Download
Metallica - Master of Puppets - 1985
I heard this album for the first time on a 7th grade field trip to New York City, while riding on the bus. My brother put it in my backpack for me to listen to on the 5 hour trip. I had never really heard, or cared about Metallica, but this album, and it's title song changed how I viewed metal. Upon returning home, I changed my Xmas list and asked for my first guitar so I could learn how to crush faces as well.
Listen or Download
Pantera - Cemetery Gates - 1990
If you are into metal but don't listen to Pantera, you are a fool.
Listen or Download
Ray Charles - Georgia on My Mind - 1974
Not the greatest example of rock, but easily one of my favorite songs growing up. My parents used to dance to this song whenever it played on the radio, so i guess it brings back a lot of old memories for me.
Listen or Download
Beatles - Yesterday - 1965
I'm not a big fan of The Beatles. But, I absolutely love this song, and I think it spawned some great covers as well.
Listen or Download
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - 1979
Roger Waters, one of the best writers ever put together probably one of the best 2 albums of all time, The Wall. Not only that, but David Gilmour probably prompted more people to learn the guitar than anyone else.
Listen or Download
Aerosmith - Dream On - 1973
Aerosmith isn't my favorite band, and probably not even in my top 100, but it doesn't change the fact that Dream On is an absolute fucking classic.
Listen or Download
Pearl Jam - Black - 1991
Pearl Jam owned my soul when they launched Ten.
Listen or Download
Don Henley - Boys of Summer - 1984
The best tune to come from the Eagles.
Listen or Download
Alice in Chains - Would? - 1992
Alice in Chains is still one of my favorite bands today. I can listen to the album Dirt every day and still love every song. I still cry little butttears that heroin killed one of the best rock singers ever.
Listen or Download
Tool - Stinkfist - 1996
I discovered weed when this album came out, and Stinkfist was by far the best on the album. I think Tool is consistently one of the best rock bands in the last decade.
Listen or Download
Black Sabbath - War Pigs - 1971
If it wasn't for Black Sabbath, rock would probably be lame. It was them first that decided to add horror to music and War Pigs was the result.
Listen or Download
Third Eye Blind - Jumper - 1997
My first long-haul girlfriend dumped me when this song came out, and when I hear it, it reminds me of wanting to punch her tits. Besides that, it's one of my favorite songs.
Listen or Download
Steve Vai - For the Love of God - 1990
Steve Vai is not for everyone, but he is by far the most technically sound guitarists ever, and continues to remind all guitar players that we will never be as good as he is.
Listen or Download
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover - 1990
Eric Johnson is the combination of country, blue-grass, blues and classical all rolled into one. Once you hear his work once, you'll always remember that sound.
Listen or Download
Metallica - Fade to Black - 1984
One of the greatest rock songs ever.
Listen or Download
Audioslave - Getaway Car - 2002
A fairly new song, but written by a great guitarist and sung by one of the best rock voices in the last decade.
Listen or Download
Pantera - Walk - 1992
You would appreciate this song too if you heard it while 20 feet from the stage, during one of the bloodiest pits ever.
Listen or Download
Fates Warning - Monument - 1994
A spawn of Rush, Fates Warning played some of the best progressive metal ever.
Listen or Download
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen - 1975
Nothing needed to say here.
Listen or Download
Korn - Faget - 1994
I chose Korn to be on my list because I can vividly remember hating just about everything out at the time, sans a few grunge bands. Korn changed the face of rock. They had some of the heaviest riffs ever, one of the angriest singers ever and single handedly created a new genre of metal. I think Korn's debut album is one of the best albums in metal history.
Listen or Download
Radiohead - Creep - 1993
Radiohead is a decent band, but not one of my favorites. Although, I think this song sticks with me because of the lyrics and the way they can go from melodic to shitting on your ears in seconds. Great fucking tune.
Listen or Download
Bob Dylan - Knocking on Heaven's Door - 1973
Classic Dylan playing a great classic song. I cannot think of a song that spawned more covers from big bands than this song.
Listen or Download
Commodores - Easy - 1977
Another song that reminds me of my parents and my childhood. How can you not like Lionel Ritchie?
Listen or Download

Dude, other than Don Henley (I never really dug anything associated with the Eagles other than 7 Bridges Road), Third Eye Blind (a little too POP), Steve Vai (some bright spots, but waay too technical for my ears as a whole) and Fates Warning (never really heard it, but will listen tonight), I really love this list.
I also want to note that Easy may have one of the coolest little guitar solos in the history of cool little guitar solos.
My list (not mentioning some that Dent has mentioned):
Green Man by Type O Negative
Dogs by Pink Floyd
Fearless by Pink Floyd
Mr. Fantasy by Traffic
Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins
10 Years Gone by Led Zepplin
Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam
Stars by Hum
Old Man by Neil Young
Minerva by Deftones
Televators by The Mars Volta
Road by Nick Drake
Ballad in Urgency/Wiser Time by the Black Crowes
Lucky Man by The Verve
Space Oddity by David Bowie
Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
jimi Thing by Dave Matthews Band
One Man Army by Our Lady Peace
Come as You Are by Nirvana
Todd's Ship Ghosts by Type O' Negative
Soma by Smashing Pumpkins
Call of Ktulu by Metallica
I guess this isn't a definitive list. I can think of many others, but that's the first 25 that come to mind.

One Man Army by Our Lady Peace
Yeah, these are all chock-full of cool guitar too.
Corgan's crazed obsession with overdubbing on Siamese Dream created a high-water mark for rock guitar in my mind. It's one of my favorite albums of all time.
Stephen Carpenter's weird tuning, hyooge sound and songcraft pummel you into the melody. I got into them with White Pony, but MInerva was the frist time that I thought Chino actually had a badass voice.
Nick McCabe played the guitar like a synthesizer over, behind, around and through Richard Ashcroft's perfect pop acoustic. I fucking love to listen to Urban Hymns through headphones. McCabe plays some weird ass shit.
Mike Turner is, in my mind, a king of weird tone and disjointed rhythm. Happiness is not a Fish you can Catch is a great album. OLP had a nice mesh of slightly off-center guitar, decent lyrics with cool delivery and great rhythm.

I saw Our Lady Peace back around 2000 at the Strand in Providence. I was up at the stage the entire time watching closely, and I must say it was awesome. Strangely, they opened for Dream Theater that night.

Uploading the songs themselves is kind of a neat trick, and offers enough zest that I might get off my ass and try to come up with X songs in particular.
Where are the hip kids trading files these days? Rapidshare? Bigfile? Felchnuggets?
(No, shitbox, you can't use the uploader for your half-gig of maynard. Sorry.)

Actually, I do care. I'm hoping to get a collective from everyone, so I can hear some new tunes. Even if you listen to rap, post the shit. I've found some killer rap off of top x lists.
Posting the music seems like a nice way to present the list and makes for checking out the tune in it's entirety rather simple, fagnose - but if you can't, fuck it, just post the text and I'll Limewire them myself.

i must say, i'm really impressed by your list dent, if only because it;s damn near what i would have chosen. to perpetuate my laziness, i'll go off of your list as a start and modify from there.
Jimi Hendrix - House Burning Down
i'll go with this, if only because i have a hard time pinpointing a favie for jimi. he was an idol for me as an stupid 14 year old learning to play the guitar. love the intensity of this song, and the guitar/effects.
link
Metallica - shortest straw - and justice for all
this whole fucking album was the shit. i wasn't a huge fan of their previous work, but with this album, they had progressed enough past the thrash and started to rock for me.
link
Pantera - By demons be driven - Vulgar
baddest, meanist panter song ever. dime and those fucking whammy dives rule all. i fucking loved pantera as a 16-19 year old. one of the best bands ever. they had the total package. metal that had "groove".
link
Dazz Band - Let It Whip
well, i thought i would throw in one of my favorite, obscure choices. love me some funky stuff.
link
Beatles - eleanor rigby
i'm not a beatles fan either, this is one of the few i enjoy listening to. love the spooky feel the strings add.
link
Al Stewart - Year of the cat
the beatles got me thinking in this direction. the intro piano has always gotten me, almost makes me sad, but intriqued. a great song i think.
lol @ link
The Fixx - One thing leads to another
one of my 80's favorites. not sure why but i love it. i'm 28 so i was growing up in the middle of this shit and it made a huge impression.
link
Golden earring - Twilight zone
another cheesy 80's jam.
link
Lynard Skyard - Saturday Night Special
as cliche as they may be, i'm a fan of the Skyn. love this song.
link
Alice in Chains - Would? - 1992
FUCKING WIN. could be the best song to come out of the grunge era. i wasn't a huge AIC fan, i did have all the albums but this and "them bones" rocked me.
Tool - Prison Sex
another band i idolized as a jit. i went thru 4 copies of undertow, breaking, scratching, loosing, stealing them. that whole album was fucking sickness.
link
Black Sabbath - Snow Blind or The Wizard
another great band choice. i love these 2 songs, not to mention countless other classics that still rock the fuck outta the fluff that has been and will be. strong candidates for best band EVER.
snowblind link
wizard
Stone Sour - Bother
if i had to pick a song i never really knew who sang it, but always enjoyed when hearing it. took me forever to findout who sang it. i never got into slipknot so i had no idea who SS was. the chorus/phrasing at 1:25 stands the hair on my neck for some reason. the layered vocals and strings build an odd atmosphere. a great song.
link
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
had to add this to the list. this is me and the old lady's "Song". she's alot younger than me and was ignorant to alot of good music until we got together. she fell in love with this song after i played it for her.
link
Heart - Barracuda
not much to say, another classic rock classic. love it.
link or crazy on you
Soundgarden - Outshined
well since you listed audio slave, i remembered my favorite SG song. never was a huge fan, but always loved the intensity and changes.
link
Pantera - All of "Far Beyond Driven" and "Vulgar Display of Power"
so you listed a 2nd pantera song and i stared to remember just how fucking awesome both of these albums are from start to finish. another sure bet for best band ever.
slaughtered
i'm broken
becoming
Blue Oyster Cult - Burning for You
i'm a sucker for good classic rock, this is a great song that proves they were worth more than dont fear the reaper (another good song).
link
Korn - Blind
good choice here, and your right about the debut album being classic. they got all of the good anger out in the first album and never came anywhere close to regaining that energy.
link
Corrosion of Conformity - clean my wounds
another awesome riff. not much out of them for me besides maybe "albatross" maybe a few others, but i forget. goofy fuckers, thats fer sure.
link
i cant think of any more at the moment, not quite 25 but this was fun. maybe i can think of more and edit. |

this is really fucking hard. here's the thing, when you say greatest songs do you really mean 'songs that affected you the most'?
for instance, the list that i'm culling currently does not include the likes of bohemian rhapsody or ziggy stardust even though they are objectively 'better' but less personal than some of the songs on my list.
maybe my approach is wrong. i'm making a list of all the bands i've ever been crazy about and picking one of my favorite songs... *shrug*

I think my list was split in half. I chose a good amount of music that I feel is everything I like in a song, and the other half was music that I thought defined rock and roll, was powerful enough to create a movement or simply never gets sickening.
