Do you remember the character in "1984," the guy everyone sat around and hated for a few minutes a day?
Emmanuel Goldstein was a fabrication, a constant enemy people could come together and dislike.
"The enemy of the moment was always represented as absolute evil and any past or future agreement with him was impossible."
It occurred to me a while back, although people have often compared Osama Bin Laden to Goldstein, suggesting Bin Laden might even have been dead for years, maybe we have two Goldsteins. One for the left, and one for the right.
Bush's retarded demeanor, flubbed lines and incompetence seem like an act, and people are certainly quick to come together and hate him for a few minutes a day while other nefarious people commit nefarious acts just off stage.
Imagine:
Carl Rove (in a gravel-crunching, Emperor Palpatine voice)
"Now, young apprentice, go out there and ask them, 'Is our children learning?'" (sinister staccato laugh)
George Bush
"But, I went to Yale, I'd lose my credibility. People will laugh."
Carl Rove
"No, you have much to learn. This will strengthen us. Trust me. Have I ever failed you?"
George Bush
(aw shucks voice) "Well, OK, I'll do it. But, it won't feel right."
I'm not saying this is by design, nor that Bush is some sort of evil genius, but neither may be necessary for people to benefit from the situation.

I can't buy it. It seems far more likely that he's a well-meaning, petty doofus, pushed up in front of the spotlight by a cabal of neocons, especially given neocon history. If you posit that, then it seems self-evident that he was picked for the role.
I find Ann Coulter a much more likely pick for fakin' it. Her demeanor has cracks in it. Bush is just one long, mellow slug, mouthing what he thinks are wisdoms.

Bush is more a Comrade Ogilvy: At the age of three Comrade Ogilvy had refused all toys except a drum, a submachine gun, and a model helicopter. At six-a year early, by a special relaxation of the rules -he had joined the Spies; at nine he had been a troop leader. At eleven he had denounced his uncle to the Thought Police after overhearing a conversation which appeared to him to have criminal tendencies. At seventeen he had been a district organizer of the Junior Anti-Sex League. At nineteen he had designed a hand grenade which had been adopted by the Ministry of Peace and which, at its first trial, had killed thirty-one Eurasian prisoners in one burst. At twenty-three he had perished in action. Pursued by enemy jet planes while flying over the Indian Ocean with important despatches, he had weighted his body with his machine gun and leapt out of the helicopter into deep water, despatches and all--an end, said Big Brother, which it was impossible to contemplate without feelings of envy. Big Brother added a few remarks on the purity and smglemindedness of Comrade Ogilvy's life. He was a total abstainer and a nonsmoker, had no recreations except a daily hour in the gymnasium, and had taken a vow of celibacy, believing marriage and the care of family to be incompatible with a twenty-four-hour-a-day devotion to duty. He had no subjects of conversation except the principles of Ingsoc, and no aim in life except the defeat of the Eurasian enemy and the hunting-down of spies, saboteurs, thought-criminals, and traitors generally

Agreed.
I'm not suggesting a conspiracy. Just, he happens to fit into the slot he would have been placed if there had been, and his cohorts are taking advantage of that.

When Bush ran for office in Texas, he had campaign ads that showed him jogging. Who jogged in Texas back then (or now, for that matter?). He knew his shit in debates. He was well-spoken.
His opponent stressed that he attended good ol' UofT. His opponent stressed that he was not an outsider but one of us, a true Texan. His opponent didn't know his shit.
George Bush lost that election. He learned a few things:
People don't give a fuck if you know who world leaders are, because they don't know either.
People are very wrapped up in the perception of "the other" and want someone who belongs.
People are intimidated by knowledgable people. |

I think this dude said what a lot of uneducated people wanted to hear at a time when they needed to hear it. He came across as one of them.
In the process, my opinion of the state of intelligence of this nation has reached an all-time low.
Perhaps Bush would have read a few more books about goats, had 9/11 not happened? Maybe "no child left behind" would have been a positive thing?
But the whole shift toward "no oil well left behind" has soured my guts beyond even contemplating the reality of his intentions having ever been larger than his cronies interests.
I'm left feeling sorry for the disposable American kids he's butchered and really have no other view on him as a man or a politician. His enablers and supporters make my bile boil. |
