So I've been idling in various OiNK-related IRC channels for a few days now, trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. I'm prepared to believe this 180k-user figure I keep hearing, cause there is a ton of related activity, a lot of it near-rabid, making for a cool little sociological event, like the Titanic went down and then instead of drowning, everyone found themselves dragged aboard party boats with a surplus of champagne and fur coats and meth.
For those of you wondering what's going on now that OiNK has gone off the map, oink2.no-ip.org is a good start. It's not quite right about the genesis of #wafflehat, though. I know this because, somehow, I've found myself a part of it. Wafflehat started out as a well-intentioned but outrageously feckless stab at getting some kind of replacement tracker going, but the logistics of having someone actually put their identity on the line to purchase a domain name held us up. There was no "letting go of devs" that I know of, but rather the realization in #wafflehat that while we had been busily making up funny names, some better-organized folk who knew some Swedish people had gotten the fuck on with things, and secured hosting in the land of The Pirate Bay, which is definitely a step in the right direction. I'd have loved to step up and help out more substantially if I currently had the time for the extra work or the stomach for legal hassles, especially ones that could have untoward effects on LinkSwarm.
I swarmed "What to use instead of OiNK" a couple hours ago and just noticed it quietly blowing up, which made me realize some of you may be interested in the crap I've been putting into my head over the past couple days, and spawned this thread.
http://tehpaine.blogspot.com/ is kind of info-central for all this crap, and is where I go for updates apart from IRC, which is getting annoying, cause it's like 6 different channels across 3 different networks, and all the really good stuff is happening in an invite-only channel anyway.
The wafflehat name was coined in a public channel, so it got around a bit and has cross-pollinated (which I find sort of disappointing, as I'm sure we could have come up with something 100% awesome) and explains why http://oink.cd/ looks as it does.
BOiNK is something Pirate Bay is doing to snub law enforcement. I'm not sure what the deal is, except that it's going to be a public tracker, probably OiNK-themed to some extent, possibly ratio-less, without actually being OiNK2 or officially sanctioned by anybody anywhere. I'm not particularly interested in this myself (OiNK had a pretty unique shape to me, and public and ratioless weren't in it) though I'm happy to see TPB get involved.
The frustrating part of the post-OiNK collapse, for me, was not knowing who was in charge and what the plan was. I think a lot of us were spinning our wheels trying to be useful and/or informed but not sure who to talk to. Those of you familiar with the "backup site plan" idea will see the point of failure here. There have even been a couple nefarious types trying to assume control of various projects while pretending to be OiNK insiders operating in anonymity out of paranoia. In any case, genuine development is under way -- this is the "o2" you hear references to -- but is being kept closed for now. http://www.ohax.com/phpBB2/index.php has more. A lot more. In short...
1) BOiNK will be a music tracker you'll probably get to play with. It won't be OiNK as you knew it.
2) There will in the near future be a new OiNK that, by all evidence, will be very much like OiNK as you knew it.
The net is routing around damage. :NEOSHADES:
Disclaimer: This is just a braindump of the highlights I've seen over the past couple days. None of this is official, and any of it could change at any time. Corrections and expansions welcomed.

vas,
Thanks for this dump from the past several days. This entire genesis is quite interesting, because to the best of my knowledge, Oink was the first major quality tracker that has been shuttered (I don't consider Napster and its offspring in the same class as oink, and their demise was met with no tears), and the healing process may define lessons learned and the battle plan for future actions on trackers like Demonoid, etc. It is just fascinating to see what happens, because this will definitely give the fucking willies to any corporate lawyer out there, realizing the true power of the many headed hydra. Of course, once they (lawyers & corps) realize that they are losing this battle, they will start leaning on telecomms and the congress to eliminate net neutrality laws. But then, carriers will pop up or invest in old infrastructure to provide "neutral" connections. That latter scenario is much harder to pull off, but it may happen.
