Crystalpipes has just got back from 5 weeks in Scotland bearing a bottle of Blossom Hill 2005 California Merlot that she won in a raffle. As we are not big red wine drinkers, and are not at all familiar with American wines, I am wondering if it is any good, or should I use it to clean the drains?

You're taking a chance. Consider this review:
Why do people buy this crap?Seems to be one of the UK's most popular wines. Tells us a lot. Confected vomit on the nose and palette. No discernible tannins. Gloopy, structureless miasma. If you're going to drink this, do it from a bucket in the garden. Then have some piat d'or. Suckers.

Thanks jwalker, I shall use it for drain cleaner. Probably.
( I may keep it for use as a gift for someone I don't really like).

If you're not big wine drinkers, how would you know you're drinking piss? For example, we've liked just about every red wine we've come across in the last 5 years; we are simply too stupid to know any better.
It makes drinking wine a very cut-and-dried process.

^ You make a good point.
I may process it through my digestive tract before I pour it down the drains.

In an opposite but similar manner to Vas, I hate all wines equally and don't drink any of that foul miasma probably because I am too stupid to know better. |

I have a hard time keeping track of the wines I have liked and not. Usually I'll pick a wine style or region and drink everything I can find in my price range <$10-15. Then pick a favorite or two and move on. It is frustrating when vinyards shit the bed from one year to the next though.
Even if Inferior quality I find myself buying more 'Boxed' wines simply for the longevity of them. Generally if I open a bottle of wine one of two things happens, I have one or two glasses and the rest spoils on the counter top or I tear through the first bottle with reckless abandon and open a second bottle which then spoils on the counter top.
The Boxed wines tend to hold up really well because the foil bladder in the box protects the wine from oxidization and light. Have a glass here and there and the damn stuff is still drinkable 3 weeks are a month down the road.
Believe it or not some of the Target box or cube wine gets some pretty good reviews.
