It's a record-keeping twiddle. Everyone who has a subscription is good through infinity or til you cancel the subscription. The new monthly subscription system (which is sweet for numerous reasons) doesn't lend itself to a "good through" date since I'd need to go in there and change it on a monthly basis for it to make sense, since you pay a month ahead.
This is one of the bits that the new LinkSwarm engine will automate and save me gnashing of teeth.
