Time to build a new gaming box. What would you faggots recommend for parts? I've been able to keep up with hardware advances even less than usual, which means negative keeping up -- like I'm liable to move backwards.
What's the sweet spot for RAM/CPU/motherboard/video card for like ~600 in Newegg dollars?
Here's what I'm upgrading from; this to become the auxiliary gaming box and LBP edutainment kiosk:
* MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $70
* EVGA 256-P2-N386 GeForce 6800GS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $189
* Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500SD 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM $100
* AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 2.0GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3200BPBOX - Retail $160
* GeIL Value 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model GE1GB3200BDC - Retail $82
* Antec Performance One P150 White Steel ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 430-Watt ATX12V v2.2 Power Supply - Retail $138
Also, someone's usually a cockface in these kinds of threads. "Gah, you didn't know that the latest PCRM-XXXX latency fruitfucker RAM is the eagle's tits! HAH! And you call yourself a FAGGOT!?!" Preemptively, I douche at thee.
I like that case up there and will probably get it again in the absence of compelling alternatives. Also, I am aware of the following deal:
OCZ S.O.E 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail $80 after rebate which I will of course forget to execute

The two most important factors in a gaming box (IMO) are RAM and the video card.
On that note, max out the RAM with the fastest you can afford.
On video cards, the core clock speed is as important as the amount of onboard memory. So it is possible for a 350 Mhz / 256 MB video card to perform as well and maybe better than a 250 Mhz / 512 MB card. Savvy? I am also partial to ATI cards, but this is just a personal preference and is not based on any technical reason.
As far as processors go, I like Intel but I have nothing against AMD. Again, a personal preference.

Intel BOXD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X 209
E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M $221
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2 6400 $73 after MIR
XFX 8600GT 256MB XXX $119 after MIR
$662 in itself, but this is a good and stable system. I have nearly this same system and has been running great, throw a Zalman on the CPU and you can OC pretty far if you feel the need. |

How did you like that mobo?Were there lots of bios options?I have that exact mobo still sitting in the box.I just haven`t bought the RAM and video card yet.I plan on using it as my media machine.

Thanks for the specifics. I'm startled for the second time this week to come across this new-fangled concept of Intel being the CPUs to go with. When did that happen?
What's all this talk of a motherboard being 'stable'? There some kind of motherboard instability crisis going on in America? Are we talking about it being overclocked? I've never overclocked anything and probably wouldn't unless it made a really sizeable increase in performance or granted free STR, INT, or DEX.

Just make sure it's got multi-touch... You can build your own and program the drivers or you can opt for the pre-made solution:

the anandtech guides always seemed pretty good to me. they haven't been updated in a little while, but you can always work from the most recent one and increment versions to taste.

Well, check out the BBB, had an MSI mobo shit its pants and after 3 months of sending the motherboard back and forth I said fuck it and bought this Intel. MSI and Asus amazingly have a horrible history on the BBB registry, and have had some bad history.
The lower chipsets (965 and lower) do not support memory voltages other then 1.8v, so if you dont need the options and dont mind having to be picky with your memory you can cut almost $100 with a 965 chipset board.
Core 2 Duo wooped AM2's ass. AMD took a bit of a nose dive when they bought ATI it appears. |

For me, console gaming is the way to go for the next 3-5 years. I love PC games, and have always had a decent rig, but I usually drop out of the rat race when the new consoles come out.
This is not an attempt to start a shit-flinging party. This is advice.
I bought a PS3 last week, and I am throughly pleased.
What do you get for $500?
60 gig hard drive (easily slides out and can be replaced)
Outputs video up to 1080p
7.1 Surround Sound
Runs Linux, thus runs whatever Linux runs
Streams media from your network into its brains
Wireless Internet reception
XMB GUI, which can play video, music, browse photos and all that jazz, also includes a web browser and other doodads
Wireless controllers which sense their place in space the way the Wii controller does, recharge via USB
4 USB ports, will accept all devices (keyboards, external hard drives and so on)
Bluetooth
Multi-card reader
Cell processor (just go look it up, its the shit)
Blu-Ray DVD player
DVD, CD, HDCD player
And, of course, it plays Playstation 3 games, which I'll admit there are only a handful of good ones out now, but the lineup for the next six months makes my crotch warm
In March, it gains the ability to accept digital television signals and function as a DVR.
It offers unconditional android love and cannot die.
Anyway, it's an option.

Unfortunately the PS3 has had a very shitty release track and keeps promising games are coming out, hope the 3 games out now will hold you till X-mas when they are suppose to release the 4 more they have lined up or something.
Now, Consoles are an option, if you prefer to do online you may want to look into an XBox360, yea doesnt have the High Def player and is an older system but you can get it for cheaper, has more game selection, and unfortunately its pay (~$3/month) the online service is far better then PS3.
To each their own I guess, but with a PC you can get games on the cheap *Cough Cough*torrents*Cough* |

This is all PC. I intend one day to get one of the consoles, but this is going to be my new main windows box.
I had forgotten about the really good Serious Hardware/Software Crap PC Parts Picking Guide.
Overclocking... it often seems like the process of overclocking is making your CPU run kinda flaky, so that it acts like a CPU that costs $100 more. Then you go out and buy $100 worth of cooling to keep it from exploding.
Having said that, I recently encountered some CPU setup where you could overclock it like an extra %45 or something crazy. That, I would do.

Check out my stupidfresh power supply's blue LED clownshit.
I'm wondering about the case, is it worth it to drop 100+ on something like an Antec? Seems to me as long as the cheap one doesn't crumple like a soda can it should do.

I think you'd be best suited to roll the Core 2 Duo no matter the configuration. It's substantially cooler-running than it's AMD competition and Core/PentiumD brethren. I try not to keep up on the latest hardware n00z, so here's how my "buy a new pc on newegg.com" workflow goes:
1. Choose CPU
2. Determine socket type of CPU
3. Filter thru motherboards of that socket type and try to choose exactly what I want - i.e. two PCI-E slots? 4 DDR2 slots? preferred chipset? Supported I/O? You get the idea
4. Determine supported memory specs of chosen CPU and MOBO
5. Filter thru memory until I find a decently reviewed/priced pair of sticks. At this point, you cannot go with less than 2GB FYI.
6. Go read AnandTech about the latest crop of mid-range video cards and pick one out to buy.
7. Buy all the extra shiz - HDD, Drives, Case, Cooling.
8. Install linux. Problem solved.
A man of your mental prowess should have no problem following these easy steps. Heck, even a high-functioning LBP (with the help of a stephen hawking computer) could do it.

XP. Maybe Vista, if DirectX10 seems worth it.

I would have gone the cheap route a few years ago. Last time around I did the Antec P-150 and I've never done anything but love me for it since. If you can afford it, it's much nicer aesthetically and can be a lot more convenient to work with.
EDIT: WRONG P- I AM AS DUMB AS A BOX OF LBPS LOL

I haven't had any trouble with Vista so far.
The search function seems to be even more crippled than in other versions, though.

Agreed with this, Sure the OS doesnt have a problem but some devices still arent supported, not all software has been tested, etc. Let everyone else beta test the bugs out if you have XP still, use it for now.
ATM DX10 really isnt being used by anything other then proof of concepts and "Oh, looks wut we can do" but when you sit down to play any game out, nothing supports it. As proof of this Halo3 and Shadowrun only require ONE dll change and it runs perfect under XP dispite the "Requires Vista"
As for cases, I have the Antec P180 (All black) and its fucking sexy. Slap a Zalman or other Aftermarket cooling on your processor and you can easily overclock. Temps in my case are below room temp at idle and only go up about 20C under FULL load, my 8800GTS actually gets toasty though, in any other case it would likely die.
If you want true investment buy a good powersupply like Enermax (though they have become overpriced as of late) and a battery backup. Clean power = happy PC no matter how you slice the pie. |
