I have a netgear skype phone. The performance probably depends more on the type of range your getting from the access point. If you are in an open wi-fi location you can get the phone to hook up also so anyone that calls the house will ring through to the phone even though your not at home (kind of like call forwarding I guess). Its cool to be able to do that but not really useful as you are stuck at that one hotspot and can jump across different networks while on a call. If they could only get them to work like a cell phone it would be truly FTW, but this is probably a pipe dream for the most part. The valley I live in has Wi-max from a few different providers, one of which I have my broadband access through, its a fairly small company. It doesn't work great, but I got the WEP key from one of the admins there and put it in the phone...... sure enough if I was in range of the towers with no obstructions, it seemed to work. I am assuming the Vonage setup is pretty much the same thing. The skype service is $90 a year (skype unlimited and skype in). I primarily use it when I'm down the street at the neighbors as I have the netgear mimo router and it has really good range.
