Post cool shit you've learned recently. If you don't learn cool shits very often, you can post a cool shit you learned a long time ago.
I thought I knew all the cool keystroke tricks already, but somehow I just found out about ctrl+backspace. It deletes backwards one word at a time. It's especially awesome in your browser's URL location field if you find yourself mucking with URLs a lot.
In BASH, it's alt+backspace instead for some reason. I've tried to map this key combo to the ctrl+backspace one, for consistency, and had no luck. Alert me if you figure it out.
It's wise to punctuation, too, so, if you have http://somesite.com/nigers/things/stuff and you want to backup to 'nigers' to change it to 'nigerians', you'd hit ctrl+backspace twice. No arrow keying. Let Freedom Ring.
This was an important discovery and one I felt I should share with the class.
P.S. Your cool shit doesn't have to be about keyboards.

I learned how to jerry-rig a direct connection to an Avaya wallboard (for call stats) and set it up to be recognized by the server. I'll probably never have to do it again, but it was pretty cool. |

Something for the home handy man; I recently picked up a trick for creating perfect butt joints in laminates, veneers or other thin materials, using clear packing tape. Dress the joining faces of the material until you’re satisfied with the appearance of the joint when the pieces are set side by side. Lay down a strip of tape about a foot away from the joint and stretch it just as it passes the joint. Repeat this along the length. As the tape retracts it pulls the pieces together with a great deal of force. Perfect joint plus it holds the material together while you apply adhesive and set it in place.

Ya, but obviously it's got more components than that. Media gateways, PBX, voicemail w/ AD integration, etc. Complete ViOP solution.
The wallboard server takes call data from the phone system and outputs it to the boards. Say you've got three clients at a call center, client 1, 2, and 3. The numbers are the hunt groups, or "skills". Each skill with its stats (within service level %, calls in queue, CSRs available, etc.), will display in order and refresh every few seconds. Looks sort of like this:

and fuck me I can't format a good looking wallboard. Imagine numbers under those categories.
I got a switch and hooked it up to the board, then my laptop to the switch (didn't have a crossover cable). The boards were set to 10.xx.xx.254 to .245, so I set my laptop's IP to 10.xx.xx.246 to get within range and telnet in to change the IPs.
As for why I had to do this, the vendor shipped it to us pre-programmed with IPs given to them by our network engineer. IPs that are only to be used for voice devices. The boards are always data only. One of our telecom guys said it was fortunate the phone system didn't try to hook up to them or we would have had huge problems.
Avaya is pretty cool but can be very confusing. I've learned a hell of a lot working with their stuff over the past year.

Or maybe it's all a trick! They what us to think that they don't know what they're thinking so we'll not no what to think so they can manipulate us and make us their slaves.
Or maybe they don't know what they think and that the shear fact that we're thinking about what they're thinking makes them realize that they've been thinking about the wrong things so they change their minds again!
I also learned about 7 dimensional causality theory using lambda calculus consistency checking. Oh well time to smoke it all away :)

I recently learned that the military uses the three letter acronym "T.L.A." to mean "Three Letter Acronym" which I find amusing and awesome because of its wryly recursive humor.
I also learned recently that the automobile insurance industry secretly uses the TLA "D.W.A." which means "Driving While Asian" to indicate high accident risk factor and explain contributing factors to car accidents, but they can't use it officially. |

Learning how to TIG weld is easier if you think about creating and then pushing a uniform puddle of molten metal (a wet spot) while allowing it to suck in your rod at it's own pace.
Also semi-sexual teaching aids tend to stick in my head better than technical ones. Go figure.
