Overall I liked this.
Less shock and awe than in the first one, unfortunately; this one takes kind of a human interest angle[1] as you follow parts of a nuclear family around post-restoration Britain. They finally got around to owning up to the whole Rage virus thing being something other than your typical zombie trope, plus speed.
The helicopter scene was fuxing sweet.
Also, it was nice to see Michael from Lost doing something other than staring into the jungle with his too-many-teeth-for-his-mouth hangdog expression yelling "WAAAALT! wotak! ".
I kinda suspect from the ending there won't be a third, but I'd like to be wrong about it. Nigga done movies in outer space, spose nigga can do movies in other continents too.
[1] Possibly evocative of crappy made-for-tv sequels, oddly enough.

I thought the over-use of the "In the house, in a heartbeat" tune from 28 Days Later was sort of a metaphor for the whole film: an unnecessary rehash of something very awesome.
In a number of places the new director missed great oppertunities to build on 28 Days and show you more of that Post-Rage world. Example being when the infected got into the underground car park place where a large crowd of people were hiding. In the first film the guy who rescues Jim describes a similar scenario on the Underground, and in the new film you see them set it up and think, yeah I always wondered what that would look like. Then you just get let down by a clumsy scene ruined by overuse of strobe lighting and the same bit of musical score. Again.
I also thought that building the story around the two kids and their adult protectors was borrowing directly from Jurassic Park. And wtf is with that one magic zombie that could track them across London ?
Sorry Vas, but I think this one jumped the shark for me.

Lefen: Sorry Vas, but I think this one jumped the shark for me.
Don't apologize to me, McNiglet. It was flawed.
The magic zombie, former-protagonist-turned-villainous-coward-turned-omniscient-monster was the central weaksauce as far as I was concerned.
The repositioning as regards the nature of the Rage virus returns to my original understanding of it, but seemed a little hammy, as though they were apologizing to me directly for skimping on that part of the script the first time around. I'm sure they were.
I didn't care for the kind of clunky straw-man way they used the miltary as an immediately inflexible second human-killing plot device.
the new director
This explains much. I missed this somehow. It did feel a little like someone had bought the rights, chewed the first film up, and then made a TV movie out of it... at least in terms of plot.
But I ain't deleting it anytime soon.

The helicopter scene was indeed awesome.
I thought it was pretty good, but parts were kind of retarded. The last surviving human on the whole island is left completely unwatched? |
