Ok, people have had a chance to look this deal over, we need to start rapping about character development.

Meet Vinnie (the handcuffed dude), he is the only person we need to have in this film (actor wise) due in large to the fact that he is my brother (nepotism, gotta love it).


Jot some notes/thots about his character.

1. He's a family man, but still has the cocky-college douche inside of him

2. He has a single tattoo of a old-style padlock on his shoulder with his wife and daughter's name in it

3. he apparently doesn't have a car

4. He's a self taught musician that likes to gig, but doesn't make a living from it

5. He works at a steel plant

6. He's lactose intolerant, but can't resist a nice ice cream cone every so often

I had envisaged a certain James Dean style of moodiness about him, the sort of guy who thinks he is to cool for school, all black leather Brando jackets and steel-toed boots, with his guitar strapped across his back or carried without a case, just holding it by the neck.

How do you plan to convey the idea of other people without actors?

LOL! Posting small tidbits in threads is great too! Besides LK forgets no one actually gets access to the main files any more. (See the Intro for more details)

this is somewhat painful to watch, so i'm just going to make a guess.

when lk says:

i read "this actor is finalized and will not change, every other character(etc) else is open for debate." feel free to correct, lk/steel.

Here's a resampling of what I posted on the Celtx file:

It may be provoking to portray him with a bit more duality. Desperately wanting to live in two worlds, single man/family man, unable to really live in either...selfish motive/selfless motives-having his desires intermingle... conflicted emotion. This portrayal may add to feelings of guilt or loss late in the story. Although something to watch out for-we cannot make him so conflicted as to become undesirable, a character we cannot "root" for to survive later on. I guess the goal is to make Vinnie identifiable.

Vinnie needs to be molested as a child. Perhaps we can provide a subtle flashback at the beginning of the film illustrating this, or perhaps that's an element of his backstory. The abuse may explain his tendency towards obsessive revenge.

I saw an interview with Benicio Del Toro once. He claimed to start examination of a character by slowly and methodically assembling their wallet and contents. This creative process apparently serves as a launching point or stimulus for ideas and imagination.

That is really cool, I've heard that Daniel Day Lewis is also quite extreme when he gets into character, something about living in character from the date he accepts the role right thru till after the shooting. Apparently he was a basket case when shooting the Gangs of New York.

As for the abuse angle, I think that is a great idea. Maybe an ominous flashback in B&W that shows an uncle/priest/scout leader not committing the act, but laying a hand on a shoulder or something.
