I went backpacking through Peru May 19th - June 3rd this year. I figured I would share some of the photos I managed to snag along the way. Most of them were on the fly with no setup and on Full auto. So some aren't as crisp as they can be I guess

This last photo was probably one of the best I got the whole trip. Its called a penis palm tree and after seeing the photo you'll know why

The temerity of this short brown person, brazenly showing off all these stolen goods. How bold! It must be lawless there.

How was Peru?

Honestly, It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, at the same time TOTALLY worth it. The trip pretty much consisted of three 3-4 day hikes with some train rides and buses thrown in for good measure. One of the hikes was through the Andes which I crossed passes higher than 15,000 feet (the shot with the clouds blowing across the peak of the lower mountain was at about 14,800). Needless to say, it got a little hard to breathe. The jungle was cool, I guess I lucked out as it was over cast and didn't rain that hard when I was there. So it was about 80 with 80% humidity and no sun. Machu Pichu was really sweet. There is a small town in the valley below Machu Pichu called Aquas Callientes. They have the best markets, you can jew them down on prices like nowhere else. There are also hot springs you can go sit in. Nice setup, they have chicks that come around to the various springs for drink orders. If you ever have to opportunity to go DO IT.

I would suggest to either brush up on your Spanish or learn it before going as it made things MUCH easier for me than than some of the others in the group. You also will learn ALOT more about the environment by being able to converse with the locals. The people in general are very friendly and accommodating, of course they all want to make a buck (American). When going down to South America (something I didn't think about) If your bringing cash, make SURE the bills are in near perfect condition. They love American money but damn, god forbid you show them something with a dog-ear or a wheres George stamp on it.

Any post that leads with llama has to be good - it'd be much better with ocelot, but hey.

What kind of trip was it? Just an eco-tourism type thing, helping the natives build wells and become civilized, or to spread disease and rape the little brown people?

I'm digging the clouds, the guy on the wall at Machu Pichu (looks almost like it should be one of those office inspiration posters) and the little girl with dad in front of their hovels.

those pictures are BAD ASS. I too have backpacked around Peru and you couldn't honestly ask for a more beautiful setting. We should have the next BBP up in the Andes somewhere

me, petting a llama @ machu pichu (circa fall of 2000)

Stump: It was considered an "adventure tour". No fancy hotels except for Lima. Most places were small locally owned lodges when we weren't in tents.

note: the guy on the wall is me

Freakmachine: I'm pretty damn sure you could accomplish your mission without the assistance of any roses.

Fastlane, Autoshoes: no actual coke, but the coca tea definitely does something to you. In addition to the Coca leaves all over the place they also have Coca candy. all the same effects as the coca leaves but with an added boost of sugar, that stuff cures a headache like nothing else I've ever had.

Meta: did you try the Cuy when you were there?

yeah, I have TONS of blurry shots. The shots of everyday life aren't all that spectacular, maybe interesting. This is a photo of a typical meat market in Peru. In the back corner there was a guy that had pretty much whole cows and what not. All you did was tell him what you canted and he would hack the shit out of the animal to get you the piece you wanted. I didn't stay in there long as the smells kinda got to you. Not rotting flesh, but close.

Note: The blue bucket contained stomach and intestines, anyone for some menudo?
