I had plotted out what I thought was a very cool interweb idea...What amazes me is my stupidity in thinking that this hadn't been done...
So there are a billion online favorite/bookamrk storage websites out there...
What I want to know is A) Does anyone use one of these and B) is anyone out there doing it right??
This is what I would like to see...
-----
- Log in via most browsers
- Be able to import favorites from machines into online system
- When logged into system, have your browser actually use the online copy of favorites instead of its own (this way you don't have to have a separate "My Favorites Page" open)
- Ability to catagorize favorites and filter based upon type (work/personal/research) This way you can reduce these HUGE bookmark lists and make the selcetion more relevant to what you are doing right then.
- Lastly... Collaboration... Create a Favorites list and share it between a group...

Haha.
I think a stumbling block here is that the browser would have to support using the website as its remote bookmark store. Without a standard, you're relying on third-party extensions, which the most popular browser doesn't make real easy.
There are plenty of bookmark-storing systems, but most of them are various levels of ambition on top of "here are all your personal fuking links", which, a link isn't a bookmark. A bookmark, at least in Firefox, can have a keyword applied to it, so instead of typing out a URL, I hit Alt+D and type ls and hit enter and I'm looking at LinkSwarm. No bookmark service I've seen yet can do that.
That's actually mostly what I use my bookmarks for: fast keystroke access to sites I already know about. I have a massive set of bookmarks that I haven't used in years because Google made the passage of time a bookmark-devaluer. If I don't use it in two weeks, I just google for whatever I'm looking for, and I get the most recently-agreed-upon version of whatever I'm looking for. (I guess this holds true for random bits of information, as in researching, rather than destinations.)

It would be cool to be able to bookmark journals and forums of personal interest (ala clipswarm).
Anything moving with the "personal swarm pages" idea?

Yea ...Its funny...I had this large thought written out to send here...mentioning clipswarm... but I guess... You can't really sort clipswarm into catagories...its just a long list of links...which in itself rocks...sometimes I love remembering old stuff I had saved...
I do that often...Then saying oh shit that was a good tool... but ya I guess I see Vas arguement about just googling for whatever...
I guess in my job I find a specific tool to do something and then catagorize so that I can forget about it till I need it again... then I generally go through my favorites regularly to make sure I am familiar with what I have... so I know when I need to hunt down something I don't have when it pops up...
I actually had a thought that a lot of people would like this...though I was probably right...I'm also 7-8 years to late LOL...
and Vas is right as far as all the ones I've looked at...its just a bunch of links on a page... not really my vision... But there are so many out there right now... it may be more difficult to find the "grail"... or even if someone were to build soething really good now... it probably wouldn't matter...
Oh well...chalk one more retarded thought up with the Whale Shaped Tea Kettle that blows steam through its blowhole!

Re-writing the PHP conversion script in Ruby as part of automating/streamlining the conversion process.

Yeah, what you're talking about is actually quite a bit bigger than ClipSwarm. ClipSwarm may do 30% of the job, but I suspect that sufficiently pleases 70% of the people. I guess that's part of the usefulness equation of your idea. If you improve on existing sites the final 15% that they need to go, what percentage of humanity would it please? It would certainly please the shit out of me, but then, I'm a faggot for bookmark keywords. Judging by all the crappy bookmark-server ideas out there, I'm all alone.
If you drop the all-browsers requirement, and do it for Firefox alone, I bet you could get there in a couple months. Write an extension that shunts Firefox to your server for its bookmark store. Your server is some kind of DAV-type shit that lets people write to and read from a single file apiece. There's a little web front-end so people can create accounts, manage their bookmark files, maybe use the web interface as a bookmark list if they're on an airport kiosk and can't install the extension. Conceptually, it's pretty simple. Maybe even trivial.
How to do it for IE/Opera, though? Well... good luck, you sumbitch.
I actually had a thought that a lot of people would like this...though I was probably right...I'm also 7-8 years to late LOL...
Not if nobody's actually finished it yet. Get crackin faggot.

Ok, here is my uneducated, irrational input. How many bookmarks do you have that you need categories ? I use bookmark bar and drop down on FF, and use clipswarm to much benefit. I don't actually need bookmarks, except to get to pages ultra-fast, because I can remember the site name or URL of a hundred or so cool sites at any given time. I do not think I am a unique snowflake in this respect. Sharing a 'favorites page' is an 9/10th rated idea tho.
