Released today from Cingular. It's pretty rare that I anticipate hardware releases, but this is such a time.
I'm thinking a lot about getting this, but there's this bit...
Price $449.99
2-yr Contract Price $299.99
Online Discount - $100.00
*Online Price $199.99
The 2-year contract is the part that bugs me. I've been out of my Cingular contract for a few years, and kind of loathe the idea of being beholden to them once again. It may only be reflexive, since I'm pretty interested in mature versions of the iPhone, which will also require a contract with Cingular, so maybe I could just exchange hardware and it doesn't matter.
I wonder if I could find one on eBay and just use that with my Cingular account now.
Thoughts? Feel free to school me at length on cellular/data plans, as I'm paying Cingular like $120 a month now for two phones, and so am clearly an idiot and don't really know how the business model of this shit works.

Two lines, 1000 shared/rolling minutes a month, usual evening/weekend biz, unlimited SMS, and there may be a small data bit in there that I don't use because my phone sucks a dick. I'm not quite sure how it climbed up so high. It feels like renting a car where you walk out of the building and realize "only $15 a day!" somehow just morphed into $86 a day.

True.
I'm a fan of T-Mobile, just because all their plans are nationwide, and you can get really good phones (Nokias, Dash, Wing).
For $40, you get 600 minutes/line, with nights (>9PM) and weekends free. For extra $6/mo, you can get T-Zones which can be hacked/configured to work just like the Internet plan.
There's also a MyFaves plan, which, if you usually call 5 people, makes any calls to them/from them free (not 100% sure on the "from them" part). You get 300 minutes on top of that for the "unforeseen" calls. That's also $40.
Curve is, of course, coming to T-Mobile soon. But as much as I am a hardcore fan of BlackBerrys, I like the new Wing a lot.

Crackalackin: For $40, you get 600 minutes/line, with nights (>9PM) and weekends free.
OK, so what I'm gathering here is that the plan that I have isn't necessarily the most satanically retarded financial option ever.
I called Cingular and I've been out of contract long enough to 'qualify for an upgrade', which, as far as I can tell, is the privilege of paying $200 for the curve and signing up for a new contract.
She said if I could find the thing on eBay, then I could just swap the SIM card and use it with my existing plan. So now I'm weighing $450 for the curve on my shitty plan, vs $200 for it with a chance to renegotiate. Which I'd probably fuck up since I never had any useful Jew in me.
Any thoughts on that?

You need a portable pocket Jew for anytime you have jew needs. On a serious note- swing by a cingular office and get all the info they are throwing at you in writing. Take it home and analyze it until you are sure its the proper situation for you. I have found when it comes to all things celluar- never go the "aw fuk it" and just sign a contract routine cuz you always end up getting jabbed in the tuckus
