I don't usually buy movies, but this will be sitting on my shelf right next to Boondock Saints: Special Edition...
The director stayed 100% true to an already amazing comic book and expanded the narative from the comics true to Frank Miller's intentions

My sweet lord. Epic doesn't begin to describe this movie. The blood, the tits, the music, the heads and legs flying about. I loved the end credits too, the silhouette of the one Greek looked exactly like Kratos from God of War.
The lesbian monster scene was nasty as hell though.

This was awesome. I found Sin City pretty forgettable but this kicked all asses, and was visually sweet. I can't think of another comic-book-to-movie adaptation this good.
As it turns out, his mouth did shut a lot of the time, but I preferred it when he was yelling.

I just saw this with Steel, he wept openly during the scary parts.
Easily the best movie I've seen in a couple of years, the story of the Battle of Thermopylae has always had a special place in my heart after I read Gates of Fire. Miller's story is pretty cool (a little too mystical), but Pressfield's had a lot more history research nuggets.
This movie fills all my violence requirements, and was beautiful to watch.

Yeah. It's been 300 non-stop here since we got home last night. The LBP fell asleep reading an old college copy of the Herodotus account and then this morning has been on my laptop watching all available 300 trailers and 300.imdb.com and 300.goddamn.internets.com and furthermore she clearly has something of a crush on the Leonidas fucker, whose pecs and screamstyle I simply cannot equal.
Leonidas didn't have Wikipedia, though, which has some good bits on Thermopylae and the culture of Sparta, which sounds like a nice place to know someone from but not really to live there.
Incidentally, casting the dude from The Wire as the villainous councilman seems more and more like a dicy move. Maybe it's just cause I can't stop seeing him run drug busts on inner-city yoots. On the other hand, picking this guy as Xerxes turned out to be a bizarrely good choice. How you go from Hollywood-pretty semi-Hispanic surferdude to asexual Persian alienmonster is beyond me.

Saw the "300 Workout" link and was going to make a separate forum post, but fuck that.
The people who trained them
They seem to be into the whole "Fight Club" ideology, in the literal sense: they love the book. If you wanted to train, you would have to be invited, and literally or figuratively "stand on the porch."
You can actually check out the full workouts for the actors from 300 with a little digging through the site and checking the schedule here.
It's an interesting gym. They insist on full ROM for all sets, but if you check the videos section, some guys can supposedly do 65 pull ups in a row. That's because of ridiculous kipping, so it isn't nearly as impressive as it sounds. If you don't know what any of that means, then I guess you are less of a faggot than I am. |

Damn I loved this movie. I'm really into using a gritty, fuzzy style in films if it allows the CGI/special effects to look more realistic. Other than the muscles of the hunchback looking fake a few times, I could't tell what was real and what was not. Especially the rhyno and elephants.
On a related note, Zack Snyder (the director) has be picked to lead up a film translation of Watchmen. He snuck this little image into the last 300 trailer that was released (its been recontrasted for clarity, but seems legit):

Saw this last night.
Amazing.
I really can't fathom what was so good about this movie.
K, the art direction and cinematography was superb, the film looked great, sepia toned monsters and Persian god/kings were impressive.
But thats it.
This movie sucked.
The dialog was awful. I mean van wilder meets gladiator bad.
I grew weary of the main characters pac-man like mouth and the constant 'lets fight for glory' pep-talks.
I even grew tired of the matrix-style slow-mo fight sequences.
If this was in the AQ and it was +1 or -1 id give an X.

visually, an excellent movie.
story was pretty predictable.
but it was an enjoyable watch.
the sex scenes rocked.
SPOILER:
worst moment: the beheading of the spartan.
these guys are total badasses, yet one lone dude manages to get close enough to behead a guy before (barely) anyone notices, and then get away without being rapekilled.
just seemed inconsistant with the story.
and what happened with the one dude's "perfect kill" thing? he made a speech about it and then it got left hanging.

It was okay.
I watched it two times to make sure I wasn't just fooling myself, but I still just found it to be okay.
The fight scenes were cool, but the constant slow-mo detracted from the moments where slow-mo would've been cool.
I think the king's accent might've changed halfway through the film. At one point I remember him sounding like Sean Connery.

I've read a lot of reviews comparing this movie to a video game - and this is true. I think most negative reviews don't make this connection in a positive way. I do.
This would have been the greatest way ever to get the PS3 off the ground. The scene with the two Spartans taking turns and bouncing combos back and forth would make a great template for an action game - up close, detailed, frenetic.
I could just see the commercial where you would see the words Playstation 3 come up, then the 3 would get an extra 0 scrawled in blood then another.

I keep hearing bad things about this movie. The main criticisms seem to be that it has no plot, bad dialogue and is racist.
A) It has comic book dialogue. Its meant to be simple. They're not painting a complicated picture here. This is archetypal masculine violence and glory. For pure enjoyment. The fact that its artisticaly pleasing as well is just a bonus.
B) Its racist. Blatantly, deeply so. Its a racist, puritanical vision of Spartan and to a lesser extent Greek, superiority. It mythologizes the Spartans enemies. I don't think Xerxes was world king of bondage either, but he is in this. And its not just Persians/Iranians, this is Spartans vs. everyone else on the planet, and they are all so inadequate next to their sweaty, chiseled abs.
Anyway, its spectacular.
