Hey Guys,

I'm taking on a project at work to get rid of this stupid app we use (well there isn't much buy in from our group cause the app is shit).

What we really need is a very simple IRC channel.

Our group has a pretty nice web portal, with all our needed tools and some tools get their own tabs at the top.

What I would like to see happen is have one of these tabs open the page that shows the results from a live chat session.

The portal already recognizes who we are I think, so basically when ever we typed something and submitted it I assume the portal could assign our user names to what we just typed.

We would need to be able to specify how long we should be able to scroll back up to read the history...

But we don't want to be able to open or join any other channels...

I would have to be a single ongoiing live channel...

Do you guys have suggestions? Maybe this is really easy I just have no idea

Thanks Guys!

Why not just use a Wiki:? Sounds like it would do exactly what you need?

A wiki wouldn't provide live chat would it?

You just need some type of live chat then? IRC wouldn't be the only way to go, and it'd be easier to block outside access with a different type.

Maybe Gtalk would work? It's simple, and it's free.

We actually use Office Communicator for or internal IM... I don't really think GTalk is quite what we want as we need it to kinda build into our portal so that everyone doesn't have to install another client.

Mofo (any suggestions)?

this sounds like a mysterious web service known to many as a "discussion forum" - you too might have seen or used one without even knowing it.

what is the backend of your web portal? is it homegrown or some sort of peoplesoft monstrosity (i say this because your current portal can see your windows domain)? you should figure that out first because there might just be an existing module out there that you could plug right in.

What's wrong with IRC and the megarad channel. If you want to use it like an IMclient just use Miranda. Its small but you get pretty much all the IM protocols, Jabber, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, MSN and IRC configurable.

For Miranda -
-In the Options Window select IRC
-Enable a default network, there's a drop down, select Freenode:rondome server.
-For the Internet address field type in irc.freenode.net
-Make sure SSL is off.
-Set Port Range to 6667-> 6667
-leave the password blank.
-Then fill out whatever you want for your userID, nickname, alternate nickname and Full Name (email). When you open miranda and it connects to all the IM servers you have set up (yahoo, msn, etc etc you can use Jabber for gTalk) for IRC choose quick connect and join the megarad channel.
-Super easy and free!! With lots of add ons.
If you really want you can enable logging to disk. That will save every IRC chat you ever participate in. Then you can post you favorite chats logs wherever.

I like IRC cause its easier to control. Yahoo, AIM, MSN are all to easy to hack for anyone to set up a permanent "room" and then leave it open to the net. There's so many booters and bots that any skiddie can use with ease.

I say stick with IRC.

If you want privacy at work tunnel out to a proxy or use JAP (Java Anonymous Proxy) or TOR (The Onion Router) coupled with privoxy (I like that one cause it all runs from a thumb drive) or Hamachi and VNC.

I use Miranda cause its free and it only leaves a teeny tiny footprint on your memory, which opposed to GAIM or Trillian is a Noodle-send, but you can use any multi IM protocol app that you can find. Or even use ChatZilla in firefox, that's IRC and you can talky while you browsey.

Yay IRC.
PS: sorry if TMI k?

IRC works, but he doesn't need something like that necessarily, and it'd require more set up than a simple flash one.

I don't have any specfic examples, but you just need a flash chat that can accept the username variable passed through the url or post data or such.
