Yesterday I opened up a folder and all I could see were the icons but almost all the text was gone.
It looked like this.

After a few minutes I figured out that the text was still there but had been set at the same color as the background.

It only happens with windows folders. I can't figure out how to fix it. WTF is going on here?
It's probably something stupid and you're all going to ass rape me. I just hope it's not a symptom of something serious.

I have almost no idea. By "windows folders" which folders do you mean?
Did you recently do a system update, or have auto-update running?
Could you have used the "Customized this folder" feature (which I don't even remember how to get to now)?
I assume you've tried re-setting the colors under Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Advanced? I think the Item you're looking for is "Menu". Try overriding whatever's there now with some color and see what happens to the affected folders. |

right click -> customize this folder -> next -> select remove customizations; next -> restore filename appearance is checked; next -> finish
i just recreated this by setting the text/background to white. following the above procedure fixed it for me. running w2k, fyi.
unfortunately, the 'like current folder' option from the folder options -> view menu did not fix the problem. don't know if 'restore defaults' would work any better. as far as i can tell you'd have to fix it wherever it happens.
hope this helps...

A. Weird problem.
You mean folders in "C:WINDOWS" right? Those are some of the only folders that show the Icon with the text on the right in tile view. Go with what Vas said.
Specifically:
You can only change text color in the "Appearance" tab in the "Display Properties" window. To get there, Either right click on the desktop and select "properties" from the context menu, or go to the control panels Icon in your start menu and click "Display", then select the appearance tab, then click the "advanced" button. You will need to select "window" in the "item" field. There will be two choices for the colors of all windows, one that's the background and one that is the text. The text color will be on the second color choice. From there try a few different colors and see if they stick, if they do then just change the color back to black. If they don't...
Might be a good idea to run your anti-virus app and any spyware/adware apps that you have on hand, just in case. Looks like you already have AVG, AdAware and HijackThis, use em.
If you get nothing from all this then try and remember if you installed anything just before this weirdness. Uninstall it. If everything goes back to normal after a system restart then you're all good. If not then you have three choices left: 1. Live with this annoyance 2. Either go back a smidge to a restore point or do a repair install from you windows cd 3. Wait until one of the more 1337 mofo's around here can weigh in on the subject.
That is literally all I can think of. Hope its of some help.

have you tried rebooting? sometimes buggy shit like that irons itself out with a handy-dandy reboot.

Have you yelled at the computer ? Sometimes you can shame them into proper behavior.

I've seen freaky things happen sometimes (twice, to be exact) - and each time, running the Windows setup program from the CD, and choosing the "reinstall" (or whatever they call it) option worked great and did not remove anything already on the machine.

Yes - it really pissed me off. But it took less than 1/2 hour and it worked, so no real complaints.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd already tried them all without any luck.
No matter what color I set the text at it's always white in any folder. Subfolder text is black like always. This only seems to affect individual files.
For the moment I have the background set to gray so I can read text but I still want to know what's going on.

Are you running any third party GUI software like window blinds,or maybe used one in the past and then uninstalled the software?
It is possible you have a corrupt comctl32.dll file, which is located in C:WINDOWSsystem32.
Go to dllfiles.com and download that file and replace it.I guess it`s worth a shot anyway.

I was playing that joke on people before your father told your mom the rubber was broken. It doesn't work as well as it used to.
