After numerous false starts, I've decided to take this to the swarm general and see what can be done.
I'd like to bring category icons back for the links on the front page, and this thread is the thread where I try to find someone who has both the interest, time and also skill to help me out with graphics.
I'd need 25 small images that match the deadplanet theme in some way that articulate the following concepts:
Animation
Asshat
Bizarre
Books
Caption
Computer Graphics
Computer Modding
Cool
Cool Site of the Day
Film and Television
Funny
General News
Internet Related
Operating Systems
People of Interest
Photoshoppery
Politics
Robotics
Science and Space
Security and Viruses
Sexual Delight
Software
Technology
Video Games
Violence and War
And they have to articulate those concepts somehow in a 25px-by-25px space. If you really needed to, you could bump up to 35px by 35px, though that'd be pushing it to the limit. I suppose if your ideas totally rock peoples' faces off we could go wider, but no taller.
Here's a shitty mockup I did last time I was thinking about this. It showcases a few 25-pixel icons I made, as well as my utter inability to create anything visually non-horrid.
Your icons, if you choose to make them, don't have to be monochrome -- I just suck at graphics. You could do monochrome. You could do monochrome with an accent color motif running tastefully throughout the collection. You could do something bizarre. These do have to be slick, though, since they'll comprise about half of what people will see when they first eyeball the swarm. If they are, they'll be used ASAP for the deadplanet theme and when I port that theme to the new engine in the remote future, they'll be used there too.
Assuming there is anyone in the universe interested who has the skill and the time, post here or email me or submit an idea or mockup or whatever the hell you want to do. It's your ball, jerry.

In terms of icon decor a la deadplanet, what of the kaput theme? Maybe a color scheme merging both?

Uh, I don't think I need any more info, pretty clear to me.
I would still suggest getting more people involved just so you can get different ideas that could blow mine out of the water.

Those are somewhat goofy/retarded to be default-theme icons, but they'd go supernice as a comic-relief alternate theme, if we could get about 23 more of them. The logo could be "linskwram" in messy crayola. Probably should wait til I roll out the new engine to start work on a new theme, though, since it'll be more work to port that one too, but if you and/or others want to finish out the set in that style, I'll save it for the day.

this is what i envision, but i'm not a very good artist:
i think the orange pops better, and initially i wanted to do double-width lines, but there's not a whole lot of space to work in.
the tv would be for films and television, the bomb is for violence and war, and the anemic looking atom model is for science and space.
p.s. i like the INTERROBANG icon

I think that is fuxing sweet. We could even maybe do a little micro pixel-poke to achieve a kind of smoothness around the edges, sort of manual anti-aliasing. Then again, maybe the stark crisp edges is good too.
I like it muy mucho. Let's use the Internet to work together and expand it out to the full set. Takers?

Definitely should be a different thread. It's hilarious, though, even if I do hate the bee theme we're stuck with.
After checking out Mundhra's ideas, Dent showed me this wonder.
I'm resizing these down to 25x25 and they still look decent. I suspect I'm forgetting some basic law of web graphics[1], not having done it in some time, but I'm blown away to the point that my hair is all waving slo-mo in the blast nonetheless from what you fags have managed to engender in less than 24 hours.

[1] Exporting in Photoshop as perceptive/gif at 256 colors, no dither, looks totally iron maiden.

though, as a design thing, you may want to add a bit of orange somehwere on the main page (other than clicked links) to balance out the boldness of the icons. Perhaps something near the top of the page... 'Linkswarm' in orange... or the faded hive behind it changed to an orange hue. Balance is where it's at.

I had this idea for sexual delight, but it looks like dent pretty much has this task covered. Let me know if there are any catagories that you are missing. I can give it a go at covering those. However, it looks like dent has this all covered. Sweetness.

I think now that we have established a style (thanks mund) I think it would be STUPID to not see a bunch of different ideas. I'll continue to put ideas together and would love to see other ideas as well.
