Has anyone ever tried absinthe?
If so, what is an okay cheapo brand?

How cheapo are you talking?
I don't have a ton of moneys to spend, if I can even get the stuff.

I hear it's not too hard to make your own absinthe. You don't need a distill, I think, just a lot o wormwood and pure grain spirits.
But yeah, don't bother with the cheap stuff, it's just alcohol. I don't know where you can get the real thing, I've only ever had the cheap-o stuff and homemade stuff.

1 - expect to pay at about $80 a bottle
2 - Good luck not getting ripped off with fake stuff
3 - take it easy on that shit

Having read what I have about absinthe, I think I'd much rather drink a well aged single malt scotch.

Done it. Took a while to get the real thing. Had better experiences on better things, but it makes for a great story if you go into public. |

Yeah, the Islay single malts are pure alcoholic heaven. I like Bowmore (Darkest Sherry Finish is good) a lot as well as Lagavulin (16 yr single malt is amazing). If you're gonna spend $70-100 on alcohol, spend it on Scotch.

Ted Breaux's Jade line is top quality. You can get cheap Absinthe anywhere, but white people who know their shit get their shit from Ted. Check out either the Edouard 72, or the Jade Verte Suissé 65. You can find a few retailers on the net that will ship it to the U.S. Expect to pay a premium price for premium quality; each of those go for about $110 USD/bottle.
If you are unable to get genuine Absinthe from Europe, give a bottle of Pernod a try; it's roughly the same flavor, but without the Wormwood herbally goodness.
And if you know what's good for you, absolutely avoid Czech swill altogether. Any Absinthe labeled as such is pure shit and a scam.

referance - repeated from above, but whatever.
i've never had absinthe, but i haven't really tried either.
the most interesting alcohol i've ever been drunk on is mezcal. the taste can be... abrasive, but the drunk seemed to leave us much less sluggish(?) than other alcohol. even after just two of killed a fifth in half an hour.

Legality issues? Can I just get it shipped to my house?

Mezcal, man that stuff can be rough. The cheaper stuff can rank up there with moonshine. I have never tried Absinthe, I wouldnt mind it though if I could get my hands on a bottle of the real stuff.

...aack!
Islay? geebus, man. You could just chew on peatmoss sod and save the Franklin.
Now a good Highland scotch, that there's different. I like the Longmorn 24 when I can afford it.
Or the Balvenie 15 (their 12 year doublewood is much cheaper but still very nice, too)

I have a bottle of Croatian hooch that a co-worker brought back from her trip home. Her grandmother makes it and it’s used to “treat” everything under the sun. It seems to be about 30 percent alcohol content and has a bundle of herbs stuffed in the bottle, giving it a green tint. I’ve only had a single shot from the bottle and it left me feeling like I’d been huffing solvent.

Where are you located? There are a few choice Absinthe bars in LA and Vegas. Unfortunately, if its easy to get in, then you probably don't want to be there.
If you want to get all cool you could make your own, but you need what hillbillies call a "still". Real absinthe has to be distilled in order to get rid of the pesky thujorne (sp?) which can cause renal failure in high doses.
Remember, Absinthe (alcohol products derived from wormwood) is not really a proven Hallucinogenic. So you may want to save a buck or 50 and get some $hrooms.
Otherwise, order it from Switzerland. You don't need a spoon cause you don't need the sugar, well many swiss producers recommend pas de sucre. Swiss quality is supposed to be better and its supposed to be stronger. French law only allows smaller amounts of the "good" active ingredients. In fact anything labeled "Absinthe" can't be sold in France, which is weird cause if you call it "super fairy juice", you can sell it in France. Its a friggin label you silly frogs.
Anyway, a nickels worth of free advice, pass on the absinthe. Its just fancy liquor with a high price.
@Vas - What birthday?

Holy f, you are not kidding. I had that shit once.
For anyone unaccustomed, imagine if tequila had some barbeque smoke in it. That's basically the taste. |

A few of my friends and I had a "Homemade Absinthe" night
It consisted of taking around 6 shots, then eating mushrooms.
I've never tried real Absinthe, but the ghetto version wasn't 1/2 bad (until my friend kept imagining hanging himself like the monkey we had hanging from the light fixture)

mm absinthe....i have a few bottles of the stuff laying around. but i much prefer chartreuse to it, since i'm pretty sure it has that wormwood in it, and since they're secretive about the recipe, it's sold legally in the states. it gives me quite a different drunk that most other liquors; still not quite the same as absinthe, but close.
agreed on the fact that it tastes like shit. thats why i still have some laying around. oh well, i'm sure i'll down it eventually.
