I think IMBOLCPunxsutawneyPhil might like to chat about this, and I'm willing to oblige.
I don't think children should be prohibited from getting a job and being paid for it, any more than seniors should be prohibited, or black foilks prohibited, or muslims prohibited, or women prohibited, from same.
I can think of but one rationally consistent argument against children in the labor force, and that is their lack of capacity to enter into a contract. Yet there are ways that children may legitimately enter into contracts via their parents, so that argument starts to erode.
Don't even start talking about parents using their children for slave labor; slave labor is illegal already, and prohibiting slavery is a separate issue from prohibiting children from engaging in gainful employment.

Aren't there already children working in the movie industry? Is it supposed to be okay for some, but not others? (Like the way gambling is supposed to be illegal, but not for state lotteries.)

My understanding of the original child labor laws is that they were enacted to give adults the work that were previously going to orphan kids in NY and Chicago. That may be a simplification, and may be wholly wrong.

Mofo: Are we talking industrial revolution child labor or modern day, osha working conditions? I'll talk whatever over-entitled situation your little statist heart considers to be your stongest starting point. 
I like industrial revolution child employment as much as I like the notion now--I see no reason why children should be prohibited from seeking and attaining gainful employment, and that would apply 100 years ago as much as it does now.
