So, I need help creating a website. I am willing to pay someone to help me.
I intend to put together an entertainment guide, local bands and such website for my area. They have nothing like that around here. I attended a conference this summer that included a day devoted to this kind of thing. So, I've been ruminating and planning for a while.
I have it all worked out except for one aspect: I have no idea how to make the (I assume) php-heavy website I want.
I know my way around a computer, and I know enough HTML to get by. Also, I pick up on most technodiddley easily. But, I know most of my fellow swarmers are far more experienced and knowledgable about this sort of thing.
I want a clean, intuitive, super-crossreferenced, interactive dropdown menu website. But, I also want to be able to plug in all my new information and graphics through an interface instead of hard coding everything when I need to update, which would likely be more than once a day.
Check out Lawrence.com as an example of what I want it to be capable of. I figure in my area, where there are about 20 or so venues and maybe 200 bands coming and going each year, I could run the whole site with one person hired on to do advertising sales and a handful of reporters to bring in material.
Here is a short list of what i have considered.
1. Paying a geek on campus to make the site, hand me the keys, and then stay on call for tech assistance. Payment specifics would be legal and in contract form.
2. Finding a resources either in a book or on websites and learning how to do it all myself.
3. Finding someone at Linkswarm who would be willing to do number 1.
4. Finding some professional service to do it for far more than I want to pay.
So, what do you think?

You have to have some artistic talent to make an attractive site, which you obviously have. You should get a copy of DreamWeaver or Visual Studio (there's a free "lite" version available free from Microsoft) and see if you like working with it - if so, you should write the site yourself.
HTML is fun!
If you need to get it done on the cheap, maybe you can find this guy.

I have to concur. You have some brain matter and talent. Try giving it a shot yourself.
This is going to sound very redundant, but Google can give any help you could ever need.

As a resident of the city Lawrence.com defines, I'm glad to help you out.
First of all, throw that silly PHP content management site idea out the window. Believe, it or not, the engine that drives Lawrence.com is widely used (more importantly) free! It's called DJango. I'm actually familiar with one of the guys on the web team that produces sites such as Lawrence.com but also the actual Django "product".
For what you're trying to achieve, I'd definitely suggest going directly to the source. Any nerd-kid at your school is probably apt to figure out how it works. The whole "cross referencing" concept seems to be what Django was built specifically for - sort of a "self-aware" content manager.

Here's the URL for Microsoft's free version of Visual Studio, which you can use to deisgn web pages (as well as other programming).
Visual Studio Express
I used DreamWeaver for a couple of years, because FrontPage sucked. But VS is really pretty good. You can use it for ASP.NET, which is loads of fun if you have the time to fuck with it, but you can also use it for a web site designer, using standard HTML.
Also - if you start to get into it, you *must* learn how to use CSS Style Sheets - they are simple, and using styles saves tons of time and has lots of extras for setting how things look.
