Crystalpipes has been asked to re-design this web site she built because a user has complained that he has to scroll sideways to see all of the navigation buttons. It turns out that he is using a screen resolution of 800 x 640. The site was built for 1024 x 1280.
This brings me to my question. What screen resolution do you use?

That site looks like it's scaled for 1024x768.
I seem to recall somewhere that generally a website should be made for 800x600 or 1024x768, for the reason you mention.
But then I could be completely wrong, which is why I leave teh webdesgn to people who know.

It could be 1024 x 768. She thinks that the last update was done on her laptop, which is a wide-screen display. 800 x 600 is considered a bit old-school these days, here at least.

1024x768 works for me. I have dual monitors, if I need something wider I slide part of over to the other monitor.

800x600 is stupid old-school. I roll with 1280x800 (widescreen laptop). I don't browse full screen though, probably about 1024x768.

For general computing, I use 1600x1200.
For gaming, 2048 x 1536 FTmuthafukinW.

I build sites for a living and currently all my sites are built at 800 pixel width.
Usually centered with space that grows on each side depending on the users rez.
When requested by a client to have a fullscreen site, we have a left centered 800 pixel width
content and the remainder of the page grows to the right all the way across.
We have to do this because of just the complaints your friend received.
My main screen runs at 1600x1200 and my second monitor runs at 1024 for design purposes.

It depends on your audience. If it's for in-house users then you can just ask them what screen size they use. Otherwise, I would limit it to 8x6 - there are still a lot of users running smaller resolutions, including those who cannot see to well.
