Any of you swarmers been on any part of the trail ? I am interested in thoughts, anecdotes and pictures concerning. I am most interested in hearing about the start of the trail in Georgia, the conditions of the trail in Pennsylvania (known for it's sucktitude), and the 100 mile wilderness in Maine.

I am only interested in personal experiences, as I have read most of what the internets has to offer.

No, that's the Pacific Crest Trail. Appalachian trail will just be my warm-up.

ghost, i've only been on two short sections in md. we usually stick to 5-8 mile round trip hikes on weekends. i like them both a lot, the trails seem pretty well maintained and the hikes and scenery are great. i don't usually get to take many pictures while we're actually hiking, so i don't have many shots of the trail.

the first is annapolis rocks. one prominent thing that sticks out in my mind is that there was a steady uphill grade in one section and it looked like someone had filled the trail with rubble to help keep it from washing out. it really kicked my ass.

the second is weverton cliffs. this is where i ended up proposing to my wife, even though i intended to do it at annapolis rocks. i think the view here is even better. you're looking down on the potomac and are right where md, wv, and va meet.

Wow, thank you, mundhra.

From what I gather, the south to north route is basically a series of uphill battles. I'm assuming these are summertime pictures, was the trail busy ? were the blazes easy to find and identify ?

your dawg looks like it's getting along in age. Is the trail dog friendly ? I wouldn't presume to bring my dog on a 5 month hike, but i'd like to take her on the first part, maybe through Georgia.

I have been on small parts of it in the late 70's and early 80's when I was a lad. I don't remember in which states I hiked it as I hiked in several states and on several trails. Everywhere I went in the Appalaichans was beautamus. Sry, I have no pics.

I highly recommend kayaking the Chatooga river, that was awesome. Fortunately I hadn't seen deliverance yet or I wouldn't have gone anywhere near that river. Later on I saw the movie and I understood everybody's wisecracks about squealing like a pig. And I could say "Ha, I remember kayaking those level 3 rapids."

Oh, and I took a dump on Mount Oakie Top. If you find it, please email it to me. I miss it.

sorry, ghostie, never got around to replying.

i would assume uphill from south to north, yes. pictures were mostly spring, i believe. 'cept for the final few fall pics. maybe the top ones were summer. we never had a problem identifying the route, but those sections are pretty well traveled.

not sure about the dog question. i personally wouldn't take sampson out for any more than a day... maybe an overnighter if i wasn't planning on going very far; he pretty much tops out at 3.5 miles.

let us know how it goes, when it goes.

Any suggestions on survival knives?
This one seems to suit my fancy. I plan on hiking the NC A.T. early this summer. Also, any ideas on cheap one person tents?

I have hiked part of the trail in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, near Mt. Washington.

I had an ingrown toenail that got infected. I was miserable.

All I really know is that if you going south to north, you need to plan your trip to avoid New England in the winter since the weather can and will turn on you.

bigdoug, the only non-folding knife worth having is this one: Ka-Bar - Straight Edge But you're probably better off with a folder since they are more compact when it comes to hiking.

Oh, and fuck knives with half straight-half serated blades. If you want a serated blade, buy a goddamn steak knife. Otherwise you are getting a blade that you can only use half of.

I have hiked a few sections as well. I did some hiking in the White Mountain region of NH as well, and it's absolutely breathtaking. I don't have pictures, but looking up the White Mountains will bring you a gaggle of sites.

I spent 3 days in North Adams, MA camping in the Appalachians. The beauty of this part of the trail is that you can walk into 3 states; Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire within minutes. It's extremely steep, but because of that you get to see a lot of waterfalls.

I used to play an old computer game of the same name. You were in some caravan of cowboys and you were traveling across the trail. It was really cool and educational at the same time. I was a long haired stoner in high school and some things I just don't remember. You still thinking about doing this?

Bigdoug-
I've owned several folders from Cold Steel, and for the price I've been very happy. Wrecker's right about lugging around a big solid chunk of metal all day, and the faggy half-serrated bullshit. There's a bunch of sites that sell discounted knives for a bit less than you can get 'em from the manufacturers, too. A little googling will turn 'em up.

As far as tents, I've been rocking a little cheesy thing I got at Target for about $20, but so far it's held up through three years of massive binge drinking in the woods without falling apart, so I'm not gonna complain.
