I've had pretty good luck with the alpha, cept for a couple minor things to look out for.
First off I was unable to run it in mode 5 (1024x768), but mode 4 (800x600) worked, so thats what I used.
And secondly, Im curious whether or not anyone else is having trouble inverting the mouse. in_mouse 1 loses sync with my mouse to the game (thus no mouse control, and no goofyfoot inverted mouse for those of us left)
Anyway, onto my benchmark
DoomConfig.cfg settings (maxed out):
r_fullscreen 1
mode 4 (800x600)
colorbits 32
depthbits 24
r_shadows 1
r_useStandardGL 0
r_ext_compress_textures 0
Box specs:
cpu: AthlonXP2000+ @1.67Ghz
vid: Radeon9700Pro DDR128 @400Mhz
ram: 512DDR 2700 @333hhz
dx: 8.1 (of course )
os: Win2ksp3
[tada]Results[/tada]
Average Frames per second
(rough estimate mind you)
30 fps= intro, and most cut-scenes.
29 fps = gameplay, no monsters and no firing.
23 fps = gameplay, few monsters and concentrated firing.
12.3 fps = gameplay, chewed to shit by monsters and Rambo firing!
exec load times:
exec runact.cfg - 2min 31 sec
(i hope they cleaned this one up a bit
that 5x BF1942 )
8O
map load times (taked from console log):
map e3/intro - 8664 msec
map e3/e3_1 - 8700 msec
map e3/e3_2 - 10869 msec
map e3/e3_3 - 15358 msec
Thats about it.
Final thoughts; it was a nice peek into the nexgen fps but I wish it looked more like the piperoom id logo cut. That was NICE!
That said, nab it here off webwarrior.net.
WARNING - 364MB Download!
Worth it? I think so unless you hate spoilers, but how can you resist?
This is Doom III Alpha 0.02!! 8O 8O
Please let me know if you can find any crusher .cfgs or better ways to bench it. Also I can't figure out how to access the locked door in e3/e_1 (needs a correct pin #) :?:
Enjoy |

Nicely done, sir. I'm glad you posted your box specs -- at work, where I'm mostly likely to run this, I've got a cheap-ass Intel video card with 48 MB of RAM. I'll post my results later.
That is to say, assuming the shit will even run.

nice. i'm not going to bother with the alpha, though. i have a 1gig athlon and my video card is shit.
more importantly, i want this game to rock my ass off proper, so i'm going to resist. i plan on buying a new video card (mayve mobo and proc as well) and taking a 4 day weekend when i buy this bad mamma-jamma.

Yeah.. i have a pIII 1ghz machine with a radeon in there. I think this game will only do well on something higher than 2ghz and a vid card like the ati 9700. So... i think it is all time for us to upgrade. I think this is the first game that will be the single reason for me to spend a crazy amount of money on hardware. Thanks for the specs and the link by the way. I wish i wasn't on a crappy-ass ISDN line and a shit lab computer. :} I miss my sexy little box. |

would you consider this warez?
I think id planned this this (in conjunction with ATI if you've heard the rumors), to boost hardware sales right before the holiday season. The #BETAS nfo was dated 10/31/02. Halloween! Also, realize how old this alpha is, 0.02! This has been in consealment for at least a year (maybe more).
Just like the Doom->Doom2->Quake etc saga, this game will not run "in full glory" on any consumer hardware known to man! (once its gone gold that is)
Im very much looking forward to this next wave of games built around Carmack's new engine. |

would you consider this warez? Nah, not really. Yes in the sense that it's software we're not supposed to have, but no in the sense that it's not cracked or warezed. No one was supposed to have paid for it, which is the definition of warez as far as I'm concerned. So I guess it gets its own category: leaked preview software.

1ghz athlon
512mb ram
GeForce4 4200 128mb
This shit CRAWLS. I mean, it's about the most amazing game I've seen to date, but if only I could get it to run a decent frame rate. Any tips? Can you adjust the resolution/colordepth in any of those config files?

Work box:
Intel 1.8 gHz
128 MB RAM
Intel 82845G Video card, 48 MB RAM (i.e., wierd unconventional generic piece of shit)
I haven't checked my FPS, but I'll bet it's something along the lines of "1".

Any tips? Can you adjust the resolution/colordepth in any of those config files?
sho thang!
First off, fps can be displayed with an easy com_drawfps 1 command.
Additional performance tweaks can be made, by of course stripping off the neato fx that make it what it is. Some tweaks require game restart. If your stuff locks up, edit the DoomConfig.cfg manually. Use the following to help raise your fps.
Change the resolution with the r_mode x command (where x is 3 640x480, 4 800x600, and 5 1024x768.
Change bitmap color # with the r_colorbits 16 command.
Change the color depth with the r_depthbits 16 command.
Disable shadows with the r_shadows 0 command.
Force OpenGL with r_useStandardGL 1 command.
more commands you might use are:
The r_fullscreen 1 command - self explanatory.
The buggy "invert mouse" command in_mouse 0. I could not get this one to work, even after replacing my optical with a balled mouse.
Hope this helps!
btw, does the machinegun kinda look like a staple gun (ala nail)? Might be just me though.
