After reading some of the more recent link comments pertaining to games, I've come to the realization that a lot of us 'swarmers play computer games. What games? Well, it seems to be overwhelmingly team-based multiplayer FPS, which leads me to why I posted this to begin with...
What should we play?
Is there a game we can all agree on that rocks and play together? I know we've got a lot of people playing Battlefield (2, 1942, DC), Day of Defeat, Counter Strike (yuck), Red Orchestra, etc. Reply and let everyone know.
From my experience, the hardest thing about playing games online isn't the actual game, but getting friends involved. There is still no reliable way to find/follow friends into servers. Beyond that, VOIP seems to be shit in most games. My ideal experience would be to combine the "buddylist" features of Steam with the flexibility of TeamSpeak. XFire seems to be a pretty interesting prospect, but I've only recently started to use it.
Anyway, I'm just trying to get a discussion going here that will hopefully lead us in the right direction. I'd like to game with every last one of you (except Qwerty), we just need to find a common ground.

BF2 is awesome but currently buggy. There's little point in playing together if you can't join a squad, which I've been unable to do with more than 20% success for the last month at least.
Fuk CS.
BF 1942 is fun, though a little clunky around the edges.
DOD is fun. Just played it last night. Steam's shit is finally up to snuff -- was able to follow Lownotes around three or four servers. It was a little CS-like at first, but with squad work, I think it can prevail over what BF2 has taught me is the dirty lowborn nature of Counter Strike.
Am interested in Red Orchestra though my memory of 15 minutes with a demo is that its focus is perhaps more on realism and less on teamplay, which is kind of the point here, I think. Please correct if possible.
As for VOIP shit, I'm much happier using teamspeak or ventrilo or xfire or whatever works as long as I'm not simultaneously battling video game bugs and the "shit dude server's full now, escape out of it and find another?" phenomenon.
Also, welcome all fags to the first thread in the new Video Games forum. :CLOWNSHOES OF WAR:

Its an excellent idea, if I played PC based games. I tend to stick more to the consoles (x-box/x-box360)
Games played (that multiplayer is supported): Need for Speed series, Halo/Halo 2, Call of Duty 2, Quake 4

You mention some great games, and while I do console game regularly, there is NO substitute for Keyboard/Mouse in FPS games. None. Don't try and argue about it in this thread either.
Amendment: The scope of this thread will be limited to PC gaming.

Of all the games you listed, the only ine I have is BF1942. I have been left uninspired by most multiplayer FPS games.
I used to play Enemy Territory ALOT, and that game fucking rocked. THe fact that it was free didn't hurt none either.
From all of the bugginess complaints about BF2, I'm kinda glad I passed on it.
If a consensus can be reached on the game, I think I could get down with this idea.

BF2 for me as well. Just got the Armored Fury booster pack, though I haven't been through all the maps yet. The Wake Island map is by far my fave.

I don't have any real games on my computers. I play alot of Texas Hold em. Whenever anyone's up for that, I'm down.
Just PM me.
I don't think any of my current PC's are up to the task of an FPS without some glitches. My laptop maybe. I can go with PS2 easily. But, I assume that you are all talking about the PC versions of BF2 and such. Which I would glady buy, if we get some sort of gaming commission going.

I didn't ever get into the BF1, 2 franchises and it seems I have to buy more than I want to get into the fold--foo on that shit.
I have faithfully stuck around the OLD school of unreal tourniquet which provides 5% team objectives and really just arcade shoot-em up.

I actually really dug America's Army and played it quite a bit. Lost interest when I realized I had to go through a series of realistic shooting qualifications to advance to things like getting the sniper rifle and playing new maps. If you're unqualified for a weapon, you can pick it up on the battlefield if someone legit drops it at death, but as I recall some servers will penalize you for using a weapon you're not rated for. Can't remember how now; it was years ago. I do remember that the qualification thing was very much like taking a test inside a video game, and I eventually lost interest. It's too bad. It's enjoyable.
To the topic at hand -- it looks like the consensus is leaning toward BF2.

True, the qualification DOES suck in America's Army. Although, as fun as the sniper rifle is, there's nothing more fun than the big honkin' machine gun. And THAT, you don't need to qualify for... the comp. randomly selects someone to carry it. I think it slows your movement down though (for realism.. the gun is HUUGE/heavy). |

Update: I currently have the following multiplayers installed:
BF1942
BF1942 - Desert Combat
BF1942 - Eve of Destruction
Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory (Still free, still completely kick ass)
Guild Wars
I also have the original CS, but it's not installed.
It will be a while before I can get BF2.

Hmm.. Normally on the weekends I meet up with my buds drink a few bears and rock BattleTanks (Warcraft III custom map). Used to play BF2 but the bugs got so bad i couldn't stand it.
I play a bit of World of Warcraft but that's not really ideal for spontaneous group play. Personally I can't wait for Supreme Commander to be released, cuz I know I'm gonna be addicted. |

War Rock
Its Korean, I played the first beta quite a bit and there is currently another open beta which I haven't tested. Its a lot like BF2, but free for now. From the few minuted I spent on the site since the new beta was released it looks like there are a bunch of improvements. The first beta had no clan or friend support, so I dont know how well it would work for the LS squad unless they added that. Just my 2 cents.

I did give it a +10 becuase the uninstaller actually worked without deleting anything it shouldn`t.

I'm excited to see you cry after you realize your $15 subscription has bought you something that doesn't work, or has bought you something that almost works but not really, or has bought you something that works but the performance hit and wierd shitty gamekilling bugs render unlovely.
These are my experiences with Transgaming on Linux. I suppose if I didn't have any Windows boxes or sense I might have kept at the config trying to make it work, so it's possible you won't cry and instead I will get to kill a virtual representation of yourself in some consensual internetworked hallucination, which also makes me a little excited.
Meta points out that the BF2142 beta is intermittently open to early registration as of yesterday.
