As I have a xbox, few games, and generally very little want to play it, I am leaning towards modding it and using to do other shit with.
So, as I debate this, I am wondering if anyone else here has done it, and what chip they decided to go for.
Let the shit throwing begin!

Are you comfortable soldering shit? I'm guessing you aren't since you're asking this question here. I too am terrified of soldering. Not to mention I didn't feel like coughing up $50 for a chip.

You get all the pleasure of a modded xbox (xbmc, playing backups) without the pain or risk of frying your hardware. Consider also that doing this requires something called "Action Replay" which is basically a USB card reader that reads an XBOX memory card. After some extensive reading, I found that the only card worth using for the softmod is the official MS brand. If you're too cheap to get the Action Replay hardware, just download the software and roll your own card reader: http://xbox-scene.com/articles/homemade-action-replay.php
If this is too brief for you, search the shit out of forums.xbox-scene.com, it will not let you down. Softmodding saved my marriage and added 2" to the length of my ePenis.

Softmod is evidently 100% the way to go. I have an older x-cutor (or some x-treem misspelling of executor) and it's never failed me but it seems there are some advantages to the new softmod method beyond not having to carefully solder tiny-ass wires.

I too use Xecutor swampdonkey software. I paid 70 bux, shipped my xbox to some technerd(w/a 60gigHD), got it back a week later, custom lights and everything. Ive since loaded about 1000 arcade games(still havent played em all) onto it and numerous other xbox titles. I love it.

From what I know, the softmod only utilizes linux to install the firmware hack that lets you install your own dash and related apps. As far as dashes go, I just switched from EvoX to UnleashX and really have no preference for either. I spend about 1 second looking at the dash before I load XBMC (which you can also set as your dash).

I have one of the modchips that doesn't require soldering. It's only popped outta place once in 2 years and it gets ROUGHED around alot (in my car).
