I have a 698MB film on my comput0rrr.
I went into Nero to burn it to a DVD, and it shows that I have just a little bit of space left; the film is almost 4GB.

Does Nero just uncompress the film, or something, and makes it fit to the disc? I'd like to burn more movies to DVD, but some are already around 1GB, and it makes me wonder if they'd even fit.

GEEDEEARR

It depends. If you're making a video DVD using nero then it is decoding it to the native DVD/mpeg format to burn.
If you were making a data DVD, it would just be burning the .avi as a file, untouched.

I have used NeroVision to burn many an avi to video DVD (you can even create your own menus).

That's what I'm doing. It's nifty.

So if I wanted to see how much room it was going to take on DVD, I'd already need the video in .mpeg format?

Similar issue...

I've been attempting to 'backup' some DVDs recently, buy not all of them will play in my DVD player. I haven't switched DVD-R brands or anything....

Here's what I do (macified): I use MacTheRipper to rip the VIDEO_TS folder to my HD. Then I load up Popcorn (Roxio) to burn the Video_TS to a DVD. Popcorn compresses the DVD as necessary. Some DVDs I've burned have been compressed, some not.

Same computer, same software, same DVDs. Some work, some don't. More don't work than work. Any thoughts?

If you want excellent quality, use CCE (cinema craft encoder). You will not find a better .avi to dvd app.

Uart,

I've burned over 500 DVD's for my collection (macified) using the exact same software as you. I started out using DVD+R and realized at least 2-3 disks out of 10 wouldn't work, even burning the same movie 10x in a row. So, I switched to DVD-R.

I have burned probably around 300-350 movies in a row without any non-playable disks.

A few problems you may be having: Your DVD burner is finicky about certain media. I find Imation to be one of the best blanks to use. Buy small quantities until you find the media that your burner gets along with.

MactheRipper padding VOB files? Do you Delete or Pad? Never Delete, because you'll never make it past that chapter on playback.

Always verify on Popcorn, even though it takes SO FUCKING LONG. It's worth it.

Lastly, commercial Sony disks will not work with MactheRipper and Popcorn. If you do manage to burn it, it will not playback. The only software I know of that will rip a Sony disk is AnyDVD, which is for PC.

One last thing, Uart. If a DVD doesn't playback, try different DVD players around the house. If it plays in your computer, then it's probably your standalone DVD player.

I'm going to try a different brand of DVD-R, but it might be that Sony thing you mentioned. That seems like it might be a trend... although, all of them ripped, its just the burn that is weird. They ALWAYS play back on my computer, but its hit or miss in the DVD player.

If that's the case, it sounds like your standalone is the problem. Go hit-up Walmart and purchase one for $40 - they play anything.

What program do you use to convert the wave file to ac3, or am I missing something? Also which dvd author do you use?

I tried a different brand of DVD to some success, so I guess I'll have to switch it up.

Not sure if it helps, but I'm using Roxio Popcorn 1.0.3.

Re: Brands

I hear that Ritek are the best. They're also fairly cheap and many other "brands" are just relabeled Ritek.

I want to try ritek because they are cheap, but they don't seem to have them in stores. I've had success with khypermedia, but they're more expensive than the riteks.
