First off, I would say that if you only want to spend $300, factor into that equation that you are (almost) definitely going to want to buy a bigger memory card. The ones that they come with don't hold much. They're a bit cheaper now, but that means you might be spending $50 on the memory card and $250 on the camera.
Possible important aspects: do you care if it's small, or it has higher quality pictures? I would say start there, because there are other factors that become more nit-picky (fast shutter speed, viewfinder or just a screen, fast startup, etc.). |

I'm using a Fuji A400, it's almost two years old so they're much cheaper now but I bought it for $119.00 on sale back then. It's got decent picture quality, only only 4 Megapixel but at the time pro cameras were only 8 or 9 at the most. My biggest complaint with it is the shutter speed is really slow. I used to work for a camera retailer and Fuji makes decent quality digitals for the price.
For $250 you can get something much better though. Go to a Ritz store (I think they may be called Wolf's Cameras out west) and find a clerk that knows what he's talking about. They don't work on 'real' commission so you don't have to worry about that, if you think he's trying to sell a piece of shit to you though ask him if he's trying to up his Spif's for the month. Bs him that you'll probably be coming to him for digital prints so he doesn't have to worry about the $2-$5 Spif he'd get on a sale.

I have an Olympus C-5060. The only problem I have had with it is the battery got fuxored and I had to send it in for repair. The company I work for is an Olympus partner so I was able to get the repair for free.
Before that I had an HP PhotoSmart 912. That worked great until Mrs. Wrecker decided that it would be a good idea to perform drop testing on it. Even then it worked for about another year.
One thing (aside from all the previous advice) to consider is "How is it powered?" Does it take AA batteries or a rechargable? How much does a replacement battery cost? If the cost of a replacement isn't too much, consider getting a spare. Nothing like getting that perfect shot lined up to find out your battery is dead or dying and can't power your flash.
Also, make sure the weaselly fukers that sell you the camera include a USB cable. Or at least make sure it will accept a standard cable. We have this POS Nikon at work that requires a proprietary Nikon USB cable. It cost us $25 to replace it when it got lost.
I think for no more than $300 you should be able to get a decent camera.

Got a Pentax Optio S. Wouldn't have been my first pick, but it was free, and it does way more than I'd ever ask of it. 3.5MP or thereabouts. Pictures are great -- you've probably seen plenty of them. Does video with audio, limited to 30-second clips. That limit is one thing I don't like, though I rarely encounter it. I just hate the limitation. The shutter lag is a bit of a bitch. I'm impatient and it isn't instantaneous. Small shutter lag is definitely a #1 concern I'd keep in mind. You want to "capture the moment," right, faggy?
If I were in the market for a new camera, I'd start by checking out that Sony one with the large LCD that Steven Tyler was hawking a while back. Large LCD is nice, though it may eat the shit out of the batteries. (I'm seeing nutty high megapixel ratings lately too.)
Speaking of which, definitely get a spare battery, and keep it charged. Keep it with the camera. Also, get at least 1 giant card (1 or 2GB) and keep a smaller spare on you as well. Better to have spent an extra $50 and never need it, than the reverse. I paid a bit more for the super high-speed memory card. If you ever use an older camera and have to sit and wait for it to write the image to the card, you'll see what I wanted to avoid. Memory cards can be had for cheap off Newegg. I think I paid $59 for a 512MB card a while back off Newegg. Best Buy wanted $110 for the same exact card. The cheery Asian had never heard of Newegg. Inside I smiled a smile of loathing. Well, it was really a sneer, but kind of a swashbuckling one.
Get the USB cable and if possible the component interface so you can check shit out on your TV. Don't do this at Best Buy or the like cause they'll rape you wide open. Where to do it? Don't know. Never bought a digital camera myself. Just, for god's sake, don't do it at Best Buy.

Some cameras have a better anti-shake than others. My GF has a Canon ELF and you have to be standing perfectly still or it'll be blurry. But with my SONY and I can be moving a little and the picture will still come out clear.

i have a canon powershot a95 (5mp) and am very happy with it. i'm not sure what they run, because it was a gift. prolly $300 range. i found a good deal on cf cards at dell and got a 512 for $25 - probably involved a $10 rebate. def shop around on cards.
i had originally wanted a powershot g series or s series, but they're a little more expensive. the a series is more point and shoot. i had wanted to get all super serious about photography, but i'm pleased with the a95. it still has enough manual stuff that i can fuck around if i want to. the only step up i'd want to take is a d-slr ($$).
mostly everything here is taken with it. a few were taken with my fiancee's a40 (2mp). i can send you full-size samples of each if you'd like. for all my research, canon seemed the best on the price/performance tip.

I am leaning toward Canon at this point. I get a 10% discount on electronics at the UW store so that should ease the pain.

http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/541535746.htm
Nikon Coolpix P2 5.1MP, 3.6X optical/4X digital zoom, 2.5" LCD, Wi-Fi enabled for pic transfers. Normally $399.00 on sale for $199.00 one week only.
http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/541161741.htm
Canon Powershot A430 4.0MP, 4X optical zoom, 1.8" LCD, Regularly $179.99, on sale $149.99.
Canon and Nikon are both great for their optics, reading the specs on both of these I would have to say buy the NIkon. It comes with a rechargeable battery, has way more modes than you will probably ever use (including the flash modes) and you can't argue with $200.00 off. Buy it, you'll thank me later.
