Others requested this thread, so here it is.
I will start this thread dealing only with facts and try to keep personal views out, so to not influence the discussion one way or another.
According to what I have read and learned, the information on these organizations contained on Wikipedia is pretty solid as far as the creation of these organizations and their purposes. I will warn you, the reading is dull and might be confusing to some, but here it is.

Here is my initial contribution - copied directly from my previous post. The link at the bottom is an interview with Greg Palast. Some will recognize this name as one demonized by the mainstream media as a conspiracy nut. He is a former government investigator, and has a lot to say about WTO/WB/IMF. The article is worth reading, and if you are interested, there are many other articles on his web site regarding "globalisation".
The World Trade Organization is supposed to help encourage global trade - the idea being that everyone has something to offer, and if everyone contributes what they have to offer then everyone can be healthy, wealthy, and wise. In practice, they make poor countries sign contracts to allow "free-trade" zones with wealthier nations and privatize their public utilties (water, power, transportation, etc. saying it's more economically sound) before they will lend them money through the International Monetary Fund to help their poor asses out. Then foreign companies with the most muscle-power, inevitably buy them out and raise utility prices, driving the economy into the ground. It's business as usual. And remember that the World Bank is more or less owned by the US Treasury.

It is worth noting, the president of the World Bank (as of 2005) is Paul Wolfowitz, neocon extrordinaire and infamous for his role in the planning and execution of the Iraq war.
On an odd parallel, a previous World Bank president (from 1968 - 1981) was Robert McNamera, who was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Vietnam war.
