Would you leave your job for a 140k? I wouldn't. Not enough time and money into the union pension plan.

Depends if you can get another job after the money runs out.
Because 140K can buy a lot of booze and drugs. |

Except GM would force you to give up your heath care plan to get that amount. Is it worth 140k to retire without health care?

With large friends and some prudent loan sharking 140k could take you far. As I still haven't found work yet I'd have to say yes in a heartbeat.

if you're on-track to a decent pension, probably not. then again, there's the possibility that pensions will be reduced like the airline pilot pensions (one and two).
honestly, i'd probably try to line something up and take it. getting another job and having 140k to bank would be nice.

What are the conditions of the offer? 140k one time and I must never work again?
In that case, no. I could only make that last five or six years at most. I am not sure how much longer it would last even if I invest it well.
If I would be allowed under the conditions to get another job, then maybe, but I have a pretty solid state retirement fund I won't have enough time in for a while. If the retirement fund goes belly up, which it could do, then probably I would take the 140k and spend it all on whores in vegas. |

mundhra: and take it. getting another job and having 140k to bank would be nice.
Ditto. Unless the job market were the absolute shitballs it was a few years ago. That's at least two years' pay for most of us, presumably untaxed. This means you could live like you do now, with the leisure of finding an awesome job, for 3-6 months, and still have a very decent nest-egg already.
(My job now spends most of its time sucking the soul out of me, I've got enough in my 401k that I could take it with me to New Job, and there is no pension.)

sure, i'd do it. that's closer to 3 yrs pay to me, and i could use that time off to focus on a new career of what i'd really rather be doing, rather than just working to pay the bills. I'd try doing art full time, and/or purchase/start a business and make that mad cash work for me in the long run. screw pensions & shit. you never know if they'll be there later anyway. thats a good chunk of cash that has potential written all over it.

freakmachine: What are the conditions of the offer? 140k one time and I must never work again?
from here, the buyout only seems to affect medical benefits...
more here: For workers who are not eligible for early retirement, GM is offering a buyout plan with a lump sum payment of between $70,000 and $140,000, depending on how long an employee has worked for the No. 1 automaker.
basically they're getting people to retire early (26 years of work vs the normal 30) and give up their healthcare. if they're not eligible for retirement, they get the buyout price and the same.
vas: i'm assuming it would be taxed. (My job now spends most of its time sucking the soul out of me, I've got enough in my 401k that I could take it with me to New Job, and there is no pension.) DITTO'D.

I see, a real scenario not hypothetical.
Tempting. Hard question. Take the $ or risk loosing your job later maybe, and still loosing your medical and built up pension is how I read that. Makes it hard to refuse.
I would probably take the loot and invest it, and find another job. Or maybe take time to learn a new career, or travel, or who knows. |
