Hi, I have a problem. I go to bed really late, and set my alarm for 8:30, but I can't get up on time ever. Anybody have any tips for guaranteed waking up on time?
Next semester I have classes at 8am every morning. Ridiculous.

Go to bed earlier. A good sleep pattern requires a bit of will power. A beer, glass of wine, or bong-rips before bed might help you rest better. The absolute best way to do it is to go to bed at about the same time every night, and go to bed before midnight if you're getting up at 8:30am. The human body recognizes and cooperates with patterns, sleep is no exception. The more you do it the easier it gets.

Just wait until you graduate, and have to get up at 4:00am to make it across the bridge in time for work.

I'd prefer not to go to bed later. I just want a good way to not get very much sleep.

You can either handle little sleep or you can't. It would appear that you cannot. Besides, a lack of rest can lead to problems far worse than just being tired.

Ahh. Nothing like being awake 8 days a week. Though you may suffer side effects like seeing unicorns everywhere.
I have 3 alarms positioned all around my room so to turn them off I have to get out of bed and walk around.
Next drink lots of water so you will need to wake up to pee after like 3 hrs sleep.
Then make sure that you have lots of vitamin b
Coffee and smokes wake you up heaps good.
When I have a early lecture then sometimes I'll just stay awake all night and work on assignments.
Also I find positive re-inforcements help (there's nothing like waking up then playing video games) so you need to hook up with the sexy girl in class. Or at least pretend that you did.

Potentially Useful Tiplet: if you read in bed for hours before going to sleep this may have trained your mind that bed is a place to hang out, making it more difficult for you to just trot off to bed when it's time to pass out. The fix for this, if this is a factor, is to read elsewhere, and only go to bed when it's time to go to sleep. Eventually your mind will learn that bed means sleep.
I'm thinking if you can combine the above with an earlier beddie-bye time you may be happier.
Lately, I'm finding out if I go to bed at midnight I wake up all tired and shit -- like right now, for example. The silly amounts of high-test jet-fuel espresso I pour into me every morning may be a factor.

Fuck qwerty you actually said something usefull. :Bravo:
Putting your alarm clock in a place that you can't reach it from the bed works. Don't use the snooze button.

If you can, take naps. Probably not longer than 20 minutes though, or else you'll just wake up really really tired.
Don't eat/exercise less than 3 hours before bed.
Keep in mind that people who are sleep deprived perform worse on most tasks than do people who are intoxicated over the legal limit. |

I made it today.
I'm not exactly sleep deprived. I still get 6-6.5 hours of sleep a night. I just don't want to keep on oversleeping my alarm.
Fastlane's and Qwerty's advice look good. Today I put my alarm clock under my desk, and that woke me up.

Remember, you accumulate a sleep debt over time.
If you lose an hour of sleep every night for a week, then you must pay back a debt of seven hours before you feel refreshed. If I remember correctly, the average American carries around about 35 hours of sleep debt.
The problem with this is you cannot pay it all back at once; you have to get an extra couple of hours every night for a while.
Everyone requires a different amount of sleep in one night. Some need nine hours, some 12.
You should sleep without an alarm for a few days and figure up an average for how much you need. You can then figure up your debt and such.

Without an alarm I'll sleep for 12 hours easily. And then take another 4 hour nap that day. 24 is the upper limit on how many hours I can sleep comfortably in one day.
So I'm going to have a sleep debt no matter what.

Not exactly. The natural amount of time you would sleep without debt has not been determined. You are constantly attempting to gain extra hours right now. |

You have any links to resources on this sleep debt stuff? The only time I've ever heard that phrase was in the results of a sleep deprivation study and the author made a side observation something along the lines of "surprisingly, any and all sleep debt can be repaid in a single night's sleep" which seems to be at odds with what you said two posts above.

I mean the amount of time I'll sleep when it's like a daily thing, during spring break or winter break or something. I'll go from 3am to 3pm easily.

Deep sleep occurs roughly every 3 hrs. Something to do with REM cycles.
blah blah blah....
Therefore if you could fall into a state of deep sleep as soon as you went to bed then you'd need only to sleep 2-3 hrs a day.

Not 6.

the multiple alarms thing is the only one that works for me...find a good annoying alarm sound too...my current clock has church bells (pretty good) and a freaking fire truck siren (heaps good!)...I have 2 of these in different corners of the room spaced 7 minutes apart.

vas: i had always heard that regardless of debt, a full 8 hours - or whatever is normal for you - would fix it. i think there's a lot of contention either way. i do know, though, that if i stay up for 24+ hours, 7-8 will not leave me feeling 'all good'.
as far as sleep cycles, go here or here.
a nice graphic is here: here.
i do know that waking up in deep sleep sucks ass. waking up after 2 or 4 hours of sleep bites, but waking up after 1 or 3 leaves me feeling like i've been hit in the face with a baseball bat.
dino: if you feel like shit, try sleeping more or, alternately, less. that's about it. as far as sleeping through the alarm, yeah... move it away from the bed.

What Nocal said.
My doctor told me that 20 minute "power" naps were the best to clear the grogginess out of your head. A full hour nap actually makes you more tired and sluggish. I take a power nap every single day of the work week. Sitting at a computer for 9 hours a day makes me really, really, really, really tired.
At night I take a hot shower and pop a half of a Sominex. I'm out like a light. I hope my house never catches on fire, because I'm sleeping through it.

Where and how?
And did it take training? I can't nap for shit. For that matter, I can't stay asleep for shit. If I could somehow take a quick nap at my desk, I think I might take over the planet.
At night I take a hot shower and pop a half of a Sominex.
I'd be worried if I found myself having to self-medicate on a daily basis, especially for something as mandatory as sleep.
The shower sounds nice though. Think of me.

It's a good back beat that needs somebody singing over it. That's my opinion.
Also, I have no trouble getting to sleep, as long as it's reasonably dark and quiet and soft.
