Damn this is cool. Maynard of Tool dispatches a fan, and then he finishes the song with said fan in a chokehold.

Always loved that clip. I love how he looks like he's going to hug him for a second and then flips him. That guy went on at the absolute pinnacle of that song (I love that fucking song) and really deserved to get smacked around a fair amount more than that.

that tool clip looks like a set up...how come the security jumps the other guy the second he gets on stage but they let the first guy get dry humped for 5 minutes? I worked concert security a while, most bands dictate what they allow...Pantera would stop the show and make a fool of you if you hurt a kid trying to get on stage...I would help them over the barricade so i wouldn't get a boot in the face as they scrambled over. Danzig said that he would walk and it would be on our heads if 1 person made it on the stage, danzig was the biggest prick of them all...In between are most bands, those that will allow some fan participation on the stage. Then you have the Genitorturors...they had the wildest stage show, one show a guy nailed a 16 penny nail through his dick, the singer took a hook and wire and sewed some guys mouth shut...lots of genital peircings...the singer had strap-on sex with a chick and then a guy...worked their show 3 times. I like tool and perfect circle too, but maynard is an idiot...

I've read elsewhere it might have been set up. Maybe so. But, it seems real when the guy is trying to pump his fist to the music. Then again, it also seems like this would result in a lawsuit. I'll remain ambivalent.

I've also heard people call Maynard an idiot before, but they worked security for the Genitorturors.

(I'm just bustin' your balls - don't become belligerent. The last thing I want to do is argue about bands and singers. I dig Maynard and Tool, but then again I also like mayonnaise. If you don't like either, no big deal.)

AcheronDCS: What the hell kind of name is Jello

I think 'biafra' is a much more bizzare name. Jello Biafra is a damn clown...i love him.

On the subject of Maynard, well......I REALLY REALLY like tool. And to me Maynard is only 25% of the equation. Standing alone he is just plain average. But get him together with the other members of TooL(and to some extent APC) and something magical happens. These guys write their music around each other. Danny highlights maynards vocals with his drumming, adams guitar/justins bass riffs, and vice versa. They are a truly unique combo.
Any one of these guys standing alone is quite unremarkable, together they are TREMENDOUS!

As for that vid, that shit isnt staged...no way in hell. TooL are sticklers for trying to maintain the audio quality of their performances...and to that some asshat who put the vocals in jeapordy at a key moment in the song, was encouraged or 'planned' by any of the band members is just poppycock.

BTW: TooL's new record "10,000 DAYS" will be released in May sometime(hopefully may 2nd). Check Toolband.com for European Tourdates...looks like they are heading there before a US tour : (

I (completely seriously) plan on naming my firstborn Jello, largely due to Jello Biafra.

shitbox- you think maynard is going to roll around on the stage and not one security guy is going to come and at least see if he is OK? I still think it's staged..
Last 2 times tool came here, maynard stood on the back left hand corner of the stage with his back to the crowd the whole show...Tool fucking rocks, but they must have picked the name just for maynard.

AcheronDCS: What the hell kind of name is Jello

hello for jello

His stage name is a combination of the brand name Jell-O and the name of the short lived country of Biafra which attempted to secede from Nigeria in 1966. After four years of fighting and horrific starvation, Nigeria regained control of the nascent Biafran state. Jello Biafra created his name as an ironic combination of a non-nutritionally valued corporate food product and mass starvation.

I don't feel the need to downplay Maynard's performances. He has an excellent voice and a great understated style in Tool. I saw Perfect Circle live and the performance was...fucking orgasmic. He's a great writer and a great performer.

On the collective unconscious website, toolarmy.com, which i am a memeber of, you question was answered in one of the Toolchat sessions. This is where the band members enter the various chat rooms on the site and attempt to answer questions posed by us. Anyway, Maynards answer to the above question was that he is uh, i dunno the exact word, but sensitive to light in the sense that bright lights/camera flashes etc make him sneeze. This is bad if your the lead singer of a major rockband. Ive seen them several times and when he does face the crowd his eyes are ALWAYS closed. I dont see anyreason for him to be lying about that so there ya go. Also, with APC, on their last tour anyway, he sang behind a sheet like barrier, projecting his sillouette.
And yeah Acheron, i do think hes a brilliant lyricist. Lateralus CLEARLY shows that.

I've seen Tool eight times and APC once, but I don't put Maynard on a pedestal. Rather, I see him as like most Linkswarmers. Intelligent, educated by both underground and academic sources and cynical to the point of exhaustion. But, he's also just some guy. It just so happens he doesn't have to go to a 9-5 job and can pursue things most of us don't have time or resourses to pursue.

As far as metal goes, Tool is king not for Maynard so much as Danny Carey. If you can keep up with him and worm your singing/playing around his actual genius, your end product has to be good.

But, please, it's still just rock and rool. Go read a book and have a conversation for enlightenment.

Dent: I can't get past the screaming/growling in Pantera. But, that's not to say they weren't cool.

shitbox: I'm still not convinced the album and tracklistings are real. I mean "Rosetta Stoned", really?

Some people have suggested 10,000 days refers to Vietnam, which in turn refers to Iraq. I'm lukewarm about all that too.

Also, the first single supposedly comes out April 17.

Lownotes...the track listing is real , id even be willing to wager a little bet. Anyway, on aother note....this is MJK's wine. And this little band will be touring with TooL on parts of their European stops. Minus Layne Stayley and plus someone else. Speaking of Pantera, Phil Anselmo even 'sang' a few songs with AIC as a sort of 'audition' if you will. Regardless all I can say is lucky fukin limeys.

I'm new here and haven't posted before, but a few things caught my attention.

First of all, for all of you who've never heard of Jello Biafra you must not be musically educated and probably need to stop downloading the latest top-50 singles off of limewire. Biafra was not only the lead singer in one of the most influencial punk bands of all time, he is a highly touted speaker on the spoken word circuit. When I saw him he spoke for three and a half hours nonstop about everything from genetically engineered foods to Halliburton. He's very intelligent and has a lot to say. Last year he released an album with the Melvins called "Never Breathe What You Can't See", and if you don't know who the Melvins are you're helpless. All you "loyal" tool fans should be familiar with all these people. Thanks mundhra for helping to shed some light over the darkness of ignorant music groupies.

Speaking of Tool, my second topic deals with the subversive ones themselves. Most of you have failed to realize that these guys are artists who are only concerned about what they find interesting. I've seen Tool on a couple different tours and it's always been a treat. These guys are great artists, the ultimate band, and also highly intelligent. They really don't care what anybody else thinks, but they do have fun in messing with their fans. It may be assholish at times, but the fact that people care so much as to sit online and discuss as to whether an on-stage act from nearly ten years ago was staged or not just simply amuses the shit out them. This is all meant to be entertainment for them. Not us. They do this all for their own pleasure. You as fans are their tools and play usually play right into their April Fools Day jokes as well as read too much into their lyrics. Hell, maynard could recite a quote from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and people would swear it had some kind of cosmic meaning beyond the fact that you'll believe in anything.

Anyway, I'm thinking about going to Europe to catch those AIC shows if anybody's interested.

Maynard was in the Army before Tool, not to be fucked with.

I have the Aenima-era Tool logo tattooed on my right arm.

Maynard is a bit of a twat, and im a rather huge Tool fan. Ive seen them live lots and lots, and he always does something strange/annoying/fucked up at every show.

When he had his back to the audience that was so the press photographers(who were allowed in for the first 2-3 songs) couldnt take pictures of him. When they left he turned around. Thats what happened when i saw him do it anyway.

That is all.
