Thanks again for the help. The card I was considering going for was with Capital One. Any input on that?

Expert tip: If you are good enough, and you think your rate is too high, call up the card and tell them you are considering cancelling your card since it does not have a competative interest rate compared to other offers you have seen around [name your price!]. If you are worth keeping you can get it. I have used this to lower interest payments for 8-10 months in the past, not a bad hat-trick.

good tip, this has also always worked for me with cell-phone companies, if you've been with them for a while.

about 2 months ago, capitol one sent me a letter saying they raised my limit by $5k. kinda irks me cause i know they are rooting against me in the long run.

Not a bad credit card mill. During the 90's I think I bilked them outta 3-6K$

anyhow you have to start somewhere.

I would get an offer before I filled one out on my own. Whatcha buying anyhow? maybe there is a cheaper way to get it?

[except for hookers, you can usually get everying cheaper. hookers you can get for free ]

An Active Deluxe Fender Jazz Bass and Ampeg half-stack (yes it is career related). I spent a long time picking out the best deal on both and I am 100% certain on my decision.

Bumping thread because:

tank:
Absolutely cancel cards - having a bunch of active cards can fuck you as hard as having no credit, even if you carry no balance.

For instance, let's say you have 10 cards that you don't use, all with no balance carried and a $1000 limit on each.

When you apply for more credit, the financial institution looks at it as if you were $10k in debt, because you could go out and max out all ten cards after they pull the report. Happened to me.

Not 100% on this, but...
I just talked to my mom about this, and she's in the mortgage industry. It's not the debt that matters, as you might think; it's the almighty debt to income ratio.

You're right, 3 cards at 10k apiece = 30k in debt. BUT they include that as 30k in income. Therefore, you have a ratio.
Cancel those cards, and they still count that as debt, but not as income. Goodbye ratio. Figure that shit out.

Other than my student loan for $1500 that I paid off once in 82, then it came back in 2002 as a $4800 "you never paid us" (and I had no papers or proof after that long, of course, just had to pay again...fuckers!), and my first house loan, I've never used any credit cards. I have done a number of personal loans at low interest. They can be done at very low interest (3-4 per cent), long term if needed (12-36 months), and build your credit better than a card. Always pay more than they ask for. Always. When you set up the payments, make sure that your payments are about 2/3rds of what you intend to give them. Pay early, pay less. That way if you ever have a bad month, you aren't screwed.

Maybe I'm not the best to listen to, as I have no debts at all (just monthly bills), and own my home and two cars outright, but after working since 1972, shouldn't one expect to be debt free and living the American Dream?

Just listened last night to interview with VP or something at Equifax on NPR.. and canceling cards does NOT help your credit. Keep them open unless a lender specifically asks you to close them.

Here’s an interesting bit of information about credit. Yesterday afternoon my wife and I were at the bank locking in our mortgage for the next ten years (then I own it outright). After we had all the details settled we started talking about some future financial scenarios. The banker said to the wife, her one piece of advice for her would be to establish some credit. We were puzzled by this because we were under the impression that we shared a credit rating because all of our borrowing, credit cards and mortgage have been done jointly. Not the case, I have been the primary borrower on everything because I’ve always had the higher income. After fifteen years any credit history my wife had has dropped off of her credit report. She went on to say that I had a phenomenal rating and my wife had a zero rating and if something were to happen to me, she’d be screwed.

I likey my Providian (now washington mutual owned) card. The site for the card is sick....lists your current Fico credit score(which you will have to pay for elsewhere) and a bunch of other cool financial planning shit. There is even a pie graph that show you where your spending your money. I like graphs....and pie. TREMENDOUS!
