Seriously, check out Avatar: The Last Airbender. The production values are insane, and the writing is solid.

I just got the two DVDs as a gift, and I must say this series rocks hard. Thumbs up, as many as I can spare.

Shit, the images I reloaded didnt resize properly.

Anyhoo, I love the 90's Batman cartoon (the one wit Mark Hammill as the Joker), as well as some feature length jap toons (Akira). Most Anime falls off my radar however, I guess the exagerrated action doesn't suit my taste. Some French animation is pretty cool.

*Cue Vasudeva laughing and pointing at some anime porn he found on my on my computerbox (FUK YOU MAN, I WAS CURIOUS)*

Neon Genesis: Evangelion

If you have not seen this, I cannot recommend it any more highly. It's 28 episodes long but well worth it.

Buy it, rent it, steal it, whatever. But see it. But Avoid "End of Evangelion" like the plague.

I was not that overly impressed with Princess Mononoke, it seem Americanized.

Ninja Scroll is another great one.

Akira is like the Mecca of anime, everyone who likes anime MUST own this. I think a few others come close to this level, like Project A-Ko, The Bubblegum Crisis series, or the entire Macross saga.

The problem with new anime is exactly the same thing I said about Princess Mononoke, it's too americanized. The Japs do several things very well and the round eyes should let them do it. Things like anime, tiny cars, bukkake and vomit videos, home electronics, and Godzilla.

Never got into anime. But I do occasioinally catch The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy with my daughter.

It's full of LOL, including numerous "Dune" references and homages to Monty Python. Damn clever stuff that goes right over the kids' heads.

batman: the animated series is i think what lk is referring to. it is fucking awesome. that and the tick are probably my favorite cartoons.

berserk, trigun, hellsing, and rurouni kenshin are my favorite anime series. berserk is pretty dark, and i prefer that. this is probably my all-time favorite and i urge everyone to see it. i preferred the kenshin ovas to the series. i downloaded cowboy bebop but have only watched the movie.

movies: ninja scroll is sweet. i heard ninja resurrection, the sequel, is a letdown. true? akira and vampire hunter d (and the sequel) are also awesome. jin roh is good, but slower paced.

Ninja Scroll is hardcore, very very. The second part is a BIG piece of shite, in all respects.

I also liked Ghost in the Shell, the original, and the fact that I had to see it twice to understand it fully. The only other film to make me do that is Primer.

I could not get into Evangelion -- to me, the pace seemed weird, and the story contrived. Same goes for all of Myazaki's "masterpieces": visually stunning, but the stories are incredibly mushy shit without any shape or form.

To see what it would be like to combine Miyazaki-class imagery with really good storytelling, see the Avatar. I never thought I would say it, but Nickelodeon has a powerful franchise on their hands.

Well, Bebop and GITS are more mature material. It's like a weird mix of Dragon Slayer humor, Miyazaki, some Studio IG-like samurai stuff and competent screenwriting.

Just watch it already.

This anime pretty much sucked. It's not very mature, the characters aren't interesting, the humor is lame, the plot is cliche, and the animation style is very dry and unimaginative.

In the scheme of things, I rank it as equivalent to Pokemon.

Akira is teh awesome. Do you think that, like Godzilla, Akira is a result of post WWII H-Bomb/nuclear holocost creative reactions? That is to say, the ultra violent, surreal, fatalist themes that can materialize in art after witnessing such destruction. I've read this type of analysis on Godzilla and Akira in a bunch of different papers (yes papers, I was a film major after all).

Ghost In the Shell is obviously an offshoot of the Post WWII creative reaction, but it is so much more. The Wakowski Bros stole pretty much everything they could from GITS for the Matrix, and it werked too (still stealing though). Anyhew, Instead of being a reaction to nuclear destruction it seems (to me) to be a futurist's interpretation of human conciouisness vs AI conciousness. GITS 2 was good but like all sequels it lacked the heart that the original had.

Princess Mononoke is a favorite of mine for several reasons.
A. The animation is beautifull
B. Because of its "Americans/the ROTW are gonna watch this" slant. It wasn't just the same old WWII artistic reaction, it was a pretty good peek into ancient Japanese Shintoism/Shamanistic religions and myths. It bought Anime a small place in Hollywood where real animation films can play too. Most Americans think "Cartoon = kid stuff" (except those of us that watch Adult Swim). This is doubly true for feature length animation.
C. It had that element of Japanese "Noh" theatrics that alot of Anime simply lacks.
D. I just liked it.

Now Ninja Scroll is kewl, but it doesn't say anything to me. The animation is awesome and the story is great, but I don't get a message. Not that every piece of art has to say something, just that this one didn't speak to me.

As far as maturity goes, its kinda important. The whole point of the maturity level in most of the "great/classic" animated films we are talking about is that it says something to those that have the mental fortitude to see it.

HOWEVER, I like to be entertained as well. Sometimes I don't want to think and stupid shit like "Sex Warrior Pudding" is just what the doctor ordered.

In my opinion, the raison d'etre for anime is to do things that live action can't do. Fantasy/Sci Fi has taken some leaps and bounds in the past couple decades, but how many good quality flicks are there? Lord of the Rings hit the mark (in my book at least, especially the extended versions), but what else is there in the realm of excapeism? Star Wars is a good series, some hate the new episodes but I like em, but even the new CGI kewliosity is quite recognizable. The Final Fantasy flick sucked ass but the one kewl part about it was the time they took to render the girls hair, it looked pretty damn real for CGI. Lucas just didn't take the time to render the cgi elements in his new films so that they would be seamless. So as film stands today anime is still the best place to go to immerse yourself in a suspension of disbeliefe when it comes to the fantastical.

BTW - AKIRA KURASAWA - If you like anime, watch his live action films. They are older, alot of em are in B&W. But you can't tell me that Rashamon isn't a work of art. Hidden Fortress? If you watch that then you'll learn alot about cinematography in a short amount of time. The man is good is alls I'm sayin.

Peace
Don Quixote

Hell yeah. The newer Batman series (called "The Batman", I think) showed some early promise, but it sucks. It has some interesting anime-like stylings, but meh. Produced to sell toys.

If you liked the 90's Batman cartoon, you should definitely track down and watch the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons from the 40's. You can really see where the 90's Batman toon people got the inspiration for the animation style (clean lines, art deco and even the title cards). Amazing stuff for the 40's.

As for anime, I recently watched Steamboy. Kinda neat, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on.

Yeah. And on, and on, and on...

Princess Mononoke was cool. Spirited Away was boring and wierd in a non-exciting way, like a series of random arbitrary events that felt like a kid telling a story and seeing how long he can manage to not shut up. (Though the little flying attack paper pieces were cool.)

I recommend Mind Game.

Here's a question for the anime geeks: since anime has become so popular, elements of the style are popping up in animation all over the place (e.g., Teen Titans). Is this anime-like stuff appreciated? Viewed with scorn and derision? If it's not anime, why not, and what is it exactly? I pretty much missed the whole anime popularity explosion, and now I see big eyes everywhere, and I don't know what I missed or what's going on.
